Yeah I think it's the only violence I've ever seen on screen that's genuinely shocked me. Landing on the beach, first wave just falling riddled with bullets. So fucken ruthless.

Band of Brothers is the perfect companion piece to Ryan. Both shows are expert at making you care for the characters and the combat scenes are white knuckle inducingly realistic
Band of Brothers is awesome, I just re-watched and re-read and then read a few other books about them.
Generation Kill is a good modern mini series.

Yeah, lots of them were back then. Although, as awesome as their stories are it does seem a bit weird that they've had so much about them whereas there's likely scores of similar stories from the second world war.

Which war movie was the one they were all stuck in a tank? Living proof that Shia le Boof is THE biggest dickhead in cinema history given he was able to ruin that one for me.
Inglorious Basterds is well up there on my list ( 2nd favourite Tarantino movie ever ) but it's possibly a bit silly to be a genuine war flick.

I was watching a bit of Lone survivor the other and then I remembered what a fluffybunny Luttrell was to the guy that saved his life and I lost interestDecent movie if you haven't read that article - glad he's out but hope Lutteral and that book writer kick him some cash. Although, that was two years ago I guess so I wonder if there's a follow up?

I love that bit where they have to hand over the nazi staff cars to the top brass so they “test out” the armour playing on the cars before they give them up .

Luck of the draw I guess. Stephen Ambrose brought them to global attention then the other books flowed I guess. I'm sure there were many similar stories of other units

You need to watch Gallipoli for some local flavour.
Private Ryan is an epic movie. Personally, it was good to visit some of the real locations of the movie (e.g. Utah beach and the Normandy cemetery at Omaha where the movie starts and ends).
I like some of the earlier war movies like The Big Red One, Where Eagles Dare and the first anti-war movie from 1930 - All Quiet On The Western Front. The TV remake with John-Boy isn't as good.

Where Eagles Dare. Classic Clint. Good flick overall but quite a bit of 60s cheesiness. Another couple of that ilk are Von Ryan's Express and the Battle of Britain.

Agree, that’s the only movie I’ve thought he was good in . It’s almost a toned down version of what Audie Murphy did.
