You can bet the so called grudge between Cooper and Gaze and the bad behaviour will be flogged for all it’s worth by the wonderful NZ media.
The Ferald already has it leading their edition this morning.

Getting to the business end of these games.

Got a multi (hopefully) coming in for Aus most medals (looked a shoe in), Aus mens hockey (still live), Aus netball (surely), Aus womens 4000m cycling (won), NZ mens team spring (won)

        Cull swimming

        https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/commonwealth-games/103010032/commonwealth-games-are-sinking-under-the-weight-of-swimming-medals

The perfect test for swimming? Be a passenger on a capsized boat 5 kilometres metres from land. You have to swim to shore to save your life. Would you get there using butterfly?

        We could dump backstroke too.

Swimming on your back should be kept as the resort of those who can't swim freestyle well - the holiday pool dippers. There's a reason they don't have a backwards running event - and that reason is to avoid stupidity.

Or only have backstroke and butterfly in the medley.

          Effectively the 'decathlon' of swimming

Each event should have a unique skill. One swimmer shouldn't be able to collect a pile of medals for doing the same thing in different ways.

I think it’s great, yep he was a bit twatty at the finish but nothing like a bit of feeling to fuel a hopefully long standing and successful rivalry

Athletics isn't much better in areas, I agree. 100m and 200m has a big crossover in athletes, relays just reward countries with depth in the event. You could easily do a clean up of running events but it will never happen.

I think it's nuts that one of the greatest all time runners (bolt) won the same number of medals in his career as one of the greatest swimmers of all time won in each games.

I think they should make everyone do everything. Heats can be four separate races, with times added together, and then semis and finals are medley races.

Yes freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke are exactly the same thing. As are the distances.

What about skiing then? Both downhill and cross country? Potentially heaps of medals to be won there. Just the same skill isn't?

I doubt anyone would be bitching if NZ were collecting these medals. Or anyone other than Australia.

I don't admire that. Sure winning is great, but not at all costs. A few Aussie cricketers understand that now I think.

That certainly helps but I still don't admire that attitude.

I might be old fashioned but I think there is still a place for respecting your opponent, the spirit of the game, etc. To me those sorts of things are a cost if disregarded.

@snowy different sports have differing levels of etiquette and self policing, which probably drives some of the 'win at all cost' mentality?

Prime example would be Cricket (team) v Golf (individual)...how often has a player been out, but not walked, whereas I have seen players in golf, call a shot on themselves the camera hasn't picked up, and one instance, it cost a guy a win.

There are so many opportunities in golf to 'cheat' but just through how the game is played, means you don't (well the vast majority don't)
