Movie review thread...

Got my Criterion dvd of "Pandora's Box" last week (saw it cheap on eBay, brand new). I first saw it a couple decades ago, then late last year, and I liked it even better. One of the most astounding films I've ever seen. The film comes on the dvd with a choice of four separate soundtracks (the original has been lost). I've just watched the one, and will take my time luxuriating in the other three. If anyone tells you that Louise Brooks isn't the most alluring, seductive, beautiful woman ever seen on film, they are lying. Still images do not do her justice, he says wiping the drool off his lips. She needs to be seen on motion film.

OK, I was bored. I'd finished some work and didn't want to start anything new right away. So there I was, on the sofa, flicking through the channels and it was just starting, starring Danny Glover and Vinnie Jones ....

A re-imagining of Moby Dick, but with dragons. Captain Ahab, the mysterious, scarred owner of a land-ship called the Pequod travels round a mystical realm searching for the Great White Dragon. I mean how bad could it be?

It was truly desperate. How it ever got made is anyone's guess. Imagine a great big wooden 'boat' trundling round snowy Utah, while the cast throw harpoons at really bad CGI. It wasn't even bad enough to be funny. Do not watch this film. -
Olympus Has Fallen: basically Die Hard in the White House with Gerard Butler instead of Bruce Wills.

I may have liked this movie when I was 13 back in the 80s. It was ok now but had some key annoying as f*@k scenes.
The secret service and other guards at the White House were terrible. They basically all got hammered, most only had hand guns and they never used cover. The movie would have been way better if the battle for the White House was actually a battle instead of the Koreans just hammering everyone. It then turned Butler into superman.
Definitely wait for dvd on this one.
Broken City: Marky Mark is a cop who looses his job for shooting a suspect, Crowe is the mayor who keeps him from being prosecuted for the killing. A number of years later Crowe gets Marky Mark (now a PI) to tail his wife (Catherine Zeta Jones) for evidence of an affair. All is not what it seems.

Decent enough thriller, predictable as fudge, has Coach Taylor in it so that's always a bonus, and the three leads are watcheable. -

Oblivion: Tom's latest action outing. Fantastic to look at it but despite a plot that promises lots of twists, you see everything coming a mile off.

Yeah first thing I asked when it opened to awesome scenes:
If mankind was so badly buttfucked, how the fuck did they make those enormous fucking water sucking things?
-

Can rent for $7 on Google movies - worth it? I am a 2000AD fan
I wasn't an avid reader of the comics, but it seemed like a pretty faithful reproduction. Its a boy film so not for a couple's night in. I think you'll love it (got a 78% from rotten tomatoes) -
Saw Jack Reacher, was decent enough, if not a bit long for what it was, or maybe it was trying to be a bit more than what it was...

Yep, no nonsense, pretty faithful adaption. No origin story is a big plus, just a day in the life of. -

NAh not read the books, but know the issues those who have read have with tom playing the role

Funnily I was talking with Mrs TR this morning about it explaining the physical aspect of Reacher, and said The rock woulda suited the character better.

I assume Cruise will make more as he has the rights to more o fthe books doesnt he? -

Yes, Cruise has rights to the character so it will depend on how commercially successful the franchise could be. Alternatively, TC could just produce on a sequel with someone else in the lead role. -
Watched Heat tonight. (Oldie heist movie with Al Pacino/Robert De Niro). Quite long at 164 mins, reckon there were quite a few bits they could have cut, especially at the start. Definitely got better as it went along, and the actual heist sequence was great.

You reckon he'd do that though? -
Nah, i think Cruise can only see himself as the main action figure, and hollywood holds on to its action men way too long. And he has a sci fi crush so cannot help himself. But if I joined a religion written by a sci fi writer, I would damn well choose a better sci fi writer! (Although I think Heinlein would do my little religious weirdo cult heart in).

We were talking specifically about Jack Reacher though. -
true but I was referring to Oblivion on last page. Reacher, no way would I want to watch him in that, he was too small in Mission Impossible, let alone for Reacher!

Watched Red Dawn last night ... was a huge fan of the original (as a 10 year old I guess) so was keen to see how this one stacked up.
As an action movie it wasn't too bad, the action scenes were a wee bit more believable than Olympus Has Fallen (sheesh I really am on an retro 80s like movie watch at the moment).

It suffered from the main actor, well the main one who wasn't Thor, being completely unsuited for the role - no charisma whatsoever. Thor was pretty good though, and there is some decent eye candy in the form of Tyra from FNL and the blond Aussie chick from Home and Away.

There was one hilarious Hollywood stereotype this movie followed, huge spoiler so read it here:
The ethnic characters all got killed off. First the hispanic guy gets killed, the first of the Wolverines to do so, then black and guy and the hispanic girl get killed together (I didn't even know the girl was killed initially), and the last black guy has a chip planted in him and presumably dies fighting the North Koreans while leading them away from the Wolverines. The only white person of the Wolverines who dies is Thor.
