    So, the new Avengers

    I liked it, but...

    It was almost too big. Too many characters; too many locations; too many plot threads. The did an admirable job keeping it coherent, but the problems were not their own making. By making all of the Marvel movies slightly different (Guardians is a comedy, so is Thor now i guess, some are darker, some are lighter) meshing the characters together can be pretty difficult. And it was weird to go from a dark scene where a bunch of people got straight up murdered, to the Guardians taking the piss out of each other.

    It also really affected Tony Stark, who used to be the sarcy funny one, but now, with the Guardians in the same movie, seems like a snide jerk-off.

    Thanos and his magical dark elves were pretty cool, if a little clunky in the CGI

    :::

    I liked the end, it surprised the fuck out of me. But if you are going to do that, i need to know you have a plan to end it, and you're not winging it (a year from now apparently).

    And i guess that ending pretty much writes the Marvel schedule for the next 12 months.

    It's a little terrible that economic realities lead you to the conclusion there is no way Marvel are just allowing the investment they have made in those characters to literally blow away in the wind. Especially when they already have sequels announced!

    :::

    That's exactly the response I think they want mate. It leaves you hanging to see how the next film plays out. It's already going to be a smash hit!!!

    :::

    I suspect Dr Strange handed over the stone because the one alternative in which they win involved him doing so. What I don't understand is why he didn't control time in the first place and send the bugger back to wherever he came from.

    :::

    Face/off

    Driving home tonight I heard someone mention it on the radio so thought I'd give it a hoon. Christ what a load of shit, an absolutely BULLSHIT plot ( completely forgetting the two leads have different face shapes and body types ), Cage and Travolta at their hammy worst and ridiculous action scenes in which the lead guys barely get a scratch when the others conveniently fall down dead.

    I took one for the team so you all don't have to bother.

    1 guy jumping while firing two pistols out of 5 gratuitous slow motion explosions

    You’ve not seen this? AWESOMESAUCE

    I watched it years ago while under the influence of alcohol and poor taste. I thought it might be fun to watch again. Big mistake.

    That film just takes the piss at every level. The stupidest part is that while Travolta gets his life back, dozens of innocent people are killed in the process.

    Then he adopts Cages kid ?!?!?! What the actual fuck?

    How many bullets do you reckon they fired at each other throughout the movie?

    92% on Rotten Tomatoes ... which does actually surprise me! I'm in no way as far out as you MN5 but there was some seriously bullshit plotlines which need to called on

    Adopting the kid at the end
    Jumping from the oil rig, next scene he's on land

    Just to name 2.

    For fuck's sake guys...
    When a movie's basic premise consists of "two guys have their faces surgically swapped"... every other plot/consistency/common-sense/whatever... shouldn't really be a factor.
    Guys swapped faces, gun fights, doves-flying-in-slow-motion, 'splosions, fucking yeah.
    If you're complaining about that, I'm guessing you've never seen Hard Boiled.

    Look behind you, about 200 yards to the right and you'll see the point.

    A bullshit premise needn't be coupled with bullshit story lines. Most of the big budget movies are all complete bullshit.

    I think it’s you missing the point. The whole point of the film is for Travolta and Cage to throw subtlety, nuance and caution to the wind and turn it up to 11.

    If you are watching this movie for the plot you are completely missing the point. It’s just dumb fun.

    It's a John Woo movie. Broken Arrow was the same. Park the brain and just enjoy it.

    Con Air, The Rock, Armageddon.. the list goes on with 90’s dumb movies that are to be enjoyed, not picked over for plot holes.

    No I'm talking about the points made by others.

    The rest are just opinions - which are like arseholes.

    But I love Commando for that very reason. None of the movies above.

    Just because the basic premise is far-fetched doesn't mean you should blindly accept or like whatever the film throws up. The idea that a cop surgically change faces with his mortal enemy to gain info is ridiculous but cool. That said cop will later adopt the son of his mortal enemy after killing his dad and having his own son killed by the same mortal enemy is not cool, it's rather sick. As is the fact that he gets to play happy family again after dozens of innocents were mowed down in the crossfire. Yes of course it's all about suspending belief, but there are limits. I think the point is that you could still have that basic premise and a really entertaining film without the flaws mentioned above.

    While you dicks are arguing about consistencies in stupid 90s action movies, massive movie news was announced:

    New Bill and Teds!! yea boy!

    I fucking love Bogus Journey. And my kids will be watching Excellent Adventure this weekend.

    Commando gets away with this precisely cos it is Arnie and he is taking the piss but Cage and Travolta actually have a few poignant moments which belong in another movie.
