Movie review thread...

Checked out a few 'Best Picture' contenders over the holiday break:

- 12 Years a Slave - the frontrunner for the gong and you can see why. Brilliantly shot, with a storyline that is somewhat predictable but still utterly compelling. Hard to believe there aren't more serious films made about American slavery. Some of the stuff is confronting but it's never gratuitous. Not a movie I would necessarily watch again, but I certainly recommend it.

- Dallas Buyers Club - a pretty harrowing story about a bloke in Texas (Matthew McConaughey) who contracts AIDS in the 80s, and then starts dealing alternative treatments to other sufferers. It is quite complex, and very dark at times. Not exactly a fun Saturday night film (which is what me and my mate thought it would be, as we watched it only off the name and the star thinking it would be a rollicking crime/gambling/southern thriller/action thing). Pretty good, but not in the same class as 12 Years a Slave or Gravity.
-

Bloody radiohead, I never understood the adulation they got and te only so got theirs I like apparently Thom Yorke apparently loathes. If I was going to lie on the bath and slit my wrists I'd have radiohead on in the background to tip me over the edge.

OT - I think they basically peaked with OK Computer and everything after that was experimental weirdness. I think Muse are probably superior from a sustainability point of view.
-

personally i think they peaked with The Bends, which is a cracking rock album. I can see why critics and music piston wristed gibbons love OK Computer, but i just don't find it as "listenable". I would call it the most over-rated album of all time, given the plaudits it gets (Best Album to come out of the UK etc)

broooo, shit just got real. I'm no Armenian mugger either, i'll fuck you up
-
Gotta back the Kiweenslander on this one: Muse are good.
Re: The Bends versus OK Computer. Not saying one is better than the other, but musically I thought the latter introduced some great new directions which they then shat all over with Kid A.
The Bends definitely more rock.

I'm with you Tim, there is something about the way he sings that annoys the hell out of me. I've got your back against the Azerbaijanis.
-

I tend not to like Muse, with one exception- Knights of Cydonia. That is a fucking awesome song, I don't care what you say. You're not in CHARGE of me, I will like what I like.

I'd like to hear it with another singer ....
-

Heh heh! I hate that. It's like that guy who put all the Metallica "Yeah" together in a row. It went for 5 minutes and now it really sticks out when I listen to them.

Also, I always wonder why Macy Gray "Blows Bubbles when he is not near"................................
-

I saw the Hobbit last night. I thought it was fucking cool. Smaug is just about the coolest thing i have ever seen in a movie, looked awesome. Evangeline Lilly is fucking hot. The action sequences were fun, the backdrops their usual stunning selves. i thought it was great.

I haven't read the Hobbit in at least 12 years, so the details escape, hence i don't give a fuck about some of the "inaccuracies" or inconsistencies some fuckwits fixate on. "waaaah, that guys not as big as he is in the booooook, waaaaah worst movie ever" fuck off nerd.

There seem to be some cool movies coming out next year

The trailer for "Jupiter Ascending" looks cool

The new Tom Cruise sci-fi movie "Edge of Tomorrow" looks pretty good

"47 Ronin" looks fucking rad as hell

The trailer for "Godzilla" look awesome, but you know that movie is going to suck.
