Movie review thread...

47 Ronin; it was an ok watch, coulda had more fighting in it, although not quite what I expected in regard to the fantasy aspect, althought fx were pretty good.

Watched a couple of movies on the xbox last night.

Olympus has Fallen - Awesome! Dumb action with corny one liners and a pretty awesome cast.

8/10

The Lone Ranger - Overly long Pirates of the Caribbean of the west. One thing I did like was that the director decided that even when Johnny Depp's Tonto was alone he spoke english. They checked the PC shit, to an extent, at the door. Not sure if my ancestors would agree(My great, great Grandmother was full blooded native american) but sometimes you just need to forget about who's feelings you probably ARENT hurting..

Leading lady was not ugly but hardly what you would expect, an over bite that would put Bart Simpson to shame. The biggest problem with this movie was the decision to cast Depp as the supposed side kick. Armie Hammer is hardly a household name and did little to wrestle the limelight back from Jack Sparrow. And make no mistake, he may have been called Tonto but it was all Jack Sparrow.

Too many characters with little to no development and a plot that I picked 5 minutes in.

4/10
-

Raz watch Whitehouse Down as well, similar storyline to Olympus has Fallen, both good throwback action films IMO, although Nepia slated Olympus has Fallen earlier in the thread... ;)

I stand by that slating ... I wanted a refund after watching that tosh ... and I had a comp ticket. White House Down got it right, Olympus has Fallen got it horribly wrong.

Short Term 12 - arty-ish movie about a worker in a state child/foster type home who had grown up in homes herself. Had an actress called Brie Larson who is apparently the next big thing, and one of the guys from the Newsroom. It was decent enough without being spectacular.
-

I have seen it and yes it is basically the same story. I enjoyed that one too. I hope this is a shift back to dumb action movies that are just heaps of fun. I thought Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum or Tatum Channing, or what the hell his name is were a pretty good buddy/buddy pairing.

Those two in a cop flick, think Lethal Weapon, would be worth seeing.
-

Saw The way way back last night, I enjoyed it but it drove me nuts trying to pick the year it was set in. Probably a bit cheesy in parts but a decent film about blended families and being a teenager.

I watched that the other night ... I think it's supposed to be contemporary but the car might cause confusion and the water park is very dated. But I think they actually reference the water park in saying it is dated.

Steve Carrell plays a good arsehole TBF. I thought it was decent.
-

Sam Rockwell was pretty good too, but Carrell plays an excellent douche. The car was one thing, but those teenage girls would have been glued to their cellphones if it was present day. It was made by the people that did the descendants which I enjoyed too, Clooney was pretty good in that I thought.

I had to wiki that, he's a talented bugger and did very well at the various awards out of the Descendants . I've met a few people that thought it was a bit average but I thought it was really well done .

Jim Rash , he's come along way since "amateur porn guy " in the excellent [imho] One hour photo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Rash
-

Glad somebody else likes that. I only saw it once, about a decade ago on the big screen when it was released, and I thought it was as absorbing as it was disturbing. I'll have to look for it again some day and see if my original assessment holds up.
-

I watched it with my ex she didn't get the ending. Good call on absorbing and disturbing , Williams really owned that character. Have you seen this one? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Night_Listener_(film)
-

Never heard of it. I'll keep my eye open for it.
-

Continued my Best Picture candidate viewing:

American Hustle- a good movie, but not a great one. Acting performances all good (especially JLaw, who is just so... watchable), and had a storyline that was fairly entertaining, although a little confusing at times. Did tend to meander a bit though, and in the end didn't have the punch that it could have. Wouldn't be in my top 3 contenders.

Her- liked this one a lot. Really original storyline, offered something very different to the other best picture movies I have seen. Light-hearted, but makes some pretty sharp observations about love and humanity without descending into chick-flick romance rubbish. Reminded me a bit of 'Stranger than fiction' for some reason... simple enough quasi sci-fi concept but really well executed. In my top 3 with Gravity and 12 Years a Slave.
