And after listening to Billy Corgan all yesterday arvo, all i listened to last night and so far today is the Pumpkins. God i love them.
Obviously Siamese Dream we have discussed a heap recently. Rhinoceros is my third favourite song of all time.
If you take the best parts of Mellon Collie it's fucking unreal, and i don't give it enough love. If i had to rank my top 10 Pumpkins songs, probably half of them are on that album. And it's so varied, you go from something sweet/sad like "In the Arms of Sleep" to a ripping heavy metal track like "Tales of a Scorched Earth.
Billy Corgan was a fucking genius
Ha! After writing the last one ... finally a massive disagreement.
Gish was cool, Siamese Dream was off the fucking scale. Mellon Collie ... Meh. The arrogance to suggest there was 2 albums worth of music in there was off the scale. Some good songs, a couple of great ones, but overall some serious bollocks.
I never bought another pumpkins album after it.
As a final note, my flatmate from uni who was a hell of a musician, especially drummer, reckoned that Chamberlain is the best drummer of all time.
Whatffft did i actually say though?
If the album was:
Tonight tonight
Jellybelly
Zero
Here is to no why
Bullet
Ode to no one
Love
Muzzle
Porcelina
Where boys fear to tread
Bodies
33
In the arms of sleep
1979
Tales of a scorched earth
Through the eyes of ruby
XyuThat's fucking damn near perfect.
-
And i never bought another one either until Zeitgeist
-
And Jimmy Chamberlain is up there with my favourite rock drummers

I'll have to have a re-listen. I don't think I've put it on in at least 15 years.
Everytime I see it when looking for music, I don't even think about playing it .. which says a lot.

Sometimes even the best band feels the need to make a blues album ... but what if it's really good?

I just watched/listened to Metallica doing a cover of Prince (When Doves Cry).
I highly recommend you all seek it out.
(only because I hate you all... it is fucking terrible)Well that was interesting.
Nice to hear it with a bit of bass at least, on ya Rob Trujillo!

Well that was
interestingpainful.Metallica are good at butchering covers, and Kirk is still a shitty guitarist.
I know it's considered pretty cool to hassle the shit out of Metallica for whatever reason but can you elaborate why this is ?
To me he combines technical wizardry with music you actually want to listen to. The likes of Malmsteen, Vai and Satriani bore me fucken stupid in comparison.

Bomba Estereo

I'd be fucking furious if I went to a Metallica concert and got that shit.

@mn5 I just think he is really repetitive with his solos and his technique is sloppy compared to his contemporaries in thrash metal (e.g. Skolnick, Freidman). But it's a matter of taste and I'm not a thrash fan.
Angus Young, Slash and Jimmy Page are pretty sloppy too and no one has a go at them.

I've read plenty of criticism of Page over the years. An excellent composer and player in the studio but his live performances were very hit and miss. Fans of certain musicians/bands will always defend them despite their limitations.

I think Zep are arguably the greatest band of all time and he is a genius as a songwriter/arranger/producer but purely as a guitarist there were others better. Richie Blackmore to me being the obvious one from that era.

Blackmore is definitely underrated, but I'm a DP fan.
Out of the 3 Yardbirds guitarists Beck maybe the best of them.
No maybes....Beck is a fucken genius, second only to Hendrix although I don't go out of my way to listen to him. He has an amazing unique style that I've never heard anyone emulate.
Eric Claptout can fuck right off as a Guitar Hero as far as I'm concerned.
I love DP as well and it's such a shame Blackmore is best known for Smoke on the Water. He was probably the first shredder ever, the solo to Highway Star is just amazing when you consider when it came out.

been listening to a bit of Tool.
Which reminded me of this cover which I reckon is better than the original, these kids also do a great cover of Sober
