@mn5 I should have added that I didn't give a fuck. Smells like brain fluid...
Grunge wasn't my thing in the 1990s but I did like some songs from the other big 3. Of the bands you list AIC, Soundgarden and FNM are my favourites. I've seen all three live in recent years.
I've seen none so I am extremely jealous.

@nepia the preamble while waffling sets up the series well imho, it gets better and better after that
Maybe part of why I found it less interesting was the Nirvana focus as I'm not a big Nirvana fan. I just clicked at the end of part 3 that the series was written 8 years ago.
Yeah I was never really a fan either , I’ve worked with a few guys who were born around the time the article starts off and when you get talking about music and concerts you’ve been to they start frothing about Cobain and asking what it was like to be around when Nevermind came out. I can remember the first time I heard it and I didn’t hate it but there were other bands around like Soundgarden that I thought were a lot better.
He nails Pearl Jam though , Vitology is self indulgent crap on a par with Pink Floyd’s the final cut, I completely lost interest in them after that.to be fair he nails most of them (if a little forgiving of Nirvana, but he obviously loves them, so i am cool with it). I found myself nodding away, especially from about 7 on. I can see why i got in to dance music in the late 90s.
I'd pretty much forgotten about Live till I read this, christ they were awful . There were other bands around at the time on the periphery of the grunge scene like Our lady peace and Mudhoney you had to look reasonably hard to find at record stores . The appeal of Oasis and Radiohead was lost on me, stoked that Thom Yorke hates creep because its the only song I like of his apart from Harrowdown hill.
I never got into dance music.
Haha, I'm the same, when I first heard it - on a mix CD (Triple J or the Trip) I thought oh might have to listen to this band. Got hold of one of their albums and realised nope, all their other stuff is shit.
Live and Counting Crows were constantly played when I was at uni. Personally, I find Counting Crows to infinitely worse than Live.

fucking what?

Fuck me, have missed the whole rag on nirvana band wagon. A big favorite of mine but certainly not the best band of the 90s or best grunge outfit. Kurt's personal following has put another layer on the music side of things.
All those fuckers should be bowing down to the pixies imo
and I know most of them do!

God the Pixies are over rated

@rocky-rockbottom kinda hating you right now. While I've seen them all, that looked like a great show.
Metallica are fucking ace live.

The Counting Crows opening for The Who in NZ in 2009 had to be one of the biggest mismatches in artists.

Remember when Bowie toured with Nine Inch Nails?

@Nepia @Paekakboyz this always comes up. The talk is around 90s Alternative music, people will say "yea man, i love Nirvana/Pumpkins/Pearl Jam" and some speccy fuckwit will go "of course, the Pixies are so much better, and without them none of the music you like would even exist" sniffs own fart smugly
-
@mariner4life No. What tour? A lot of the times it is because they are on the same label.
-
@bovidae for Bowie it was touring his Outside album, which is a pretty weird set of songs. It actually meshes reasonably well with NIN, and i think they sort of combined their acts a bit as well.
Not sure either sets of fans really embraced i though.

I just like their music better than all three of those bands. By some margin. I'm trying to push a fart out with no luck at the moment.
-
@mariner4life don't jump out of the boat! I'm just getting the gaff ready!
But I really do rate the Pixies, not as the single source of all things awesome from the late 80's onward, but they did have a big influence on those emerging 90's bands.
Anytime you are getting anyone pinning 'everything' on a single band/musician you are looking at a pretty limited view on things.
