Latest rankings. Cab someone explain how these work ? Full credit to S.A. but surely one won doesn't guarantee a jump of two spots?
Australia at 7 ? That must be their lowest ranking ever
Nah, in the 70s they managed to get to ninth. Predictably there are claims the coaches have to go, with counter claims asking "ok, who?".
I think making the RWC final in 2015 gave a false impression. It's been a continual slide. Since then they've managed 15 wins from 36 Tests, a success rate of 41 percent.

Were there irb rankings back in the 70s?
They were absolutely dogshit in the 70s , in his book Kirky questioned the value of bothering to play them as a warm up to a tour because they were so awful. Are we supposed to be magnanimous about their slide or is it cool to get into some schadenfreude ?

To be fair, I would actually rather look forward to a test v Aussie where I was a bit nervous about the result

This would be their lowest since the official rankings then. Scotland got to 5th last year which was their highest ranking but woulda been higher in 91 when they finished 4th in the WC.

It was Jordie's composure against the Lions that got him the jumper in the first place. He shat the bed in that SA test - I reckon his feet should be firmly planted on the ground again now - so hopefully he goes back to doing the basics.

I reckon it's got to the point that's no longer helpful.

The problem is the pole smokers (Possum Head etc.) have largely moved on as great as it is to see them (ARU) get their comeuppance. The worry is what does this mean for the continuation of our revenue; Super and the Championship?

Is that correct? I don't recall him being super composed in that match (but he played well) and wouldn't his more recent play in 2018 have got him the jumper (he's played in 4 tests in 2018)?

Maybe this is pretty much their level and they should accept the early 2000s were an aberration and work from there? For most of their history about from blips in the early 90s and 2000s they’ve been decidedly average and competing with the afl and nrl hasn’t helped.

Well it's pretty subjective but my recollection was that he was amazingly composed given his age and the pressure cooker environment of the deciding test. Looked made for test footy. I do wonder if his continued selection led to a bit of over-confidence, hence throwing that ball, so hoping that brings him down to earth.
Worth remembering he scored a pretty awesome try, beautiful line while taking the ball behind him without losing any pace. Some costly brain farts but it wasn't the worst performance ever.
ALB has come away pretty unscathed given he cost us 14 points himself while creating 0 so I'll chuck his name out there again...

Might have helped if Ioane hadn't run away from the ball... I'm pretty sure if Ioane isn't calling for that, Barrett doesn't throw it. Yet Barrett is getting all the shit when the guy who called it decided to drop nuts and make it look really bad.
-
I made an earlier comment about Jordie's defence on both of Dyantyi's tries. He did exactly what NMS was criticised for vs Arg and drifted in instead of staying wide on his man.

Barrett deserves all the shit, he threw the ball. In nearly every match you see players calling for a quick lineout and the player doesn't throw the ball. Ioane deserves the shit he got for getting bundled into touch too often but this was all on the passer.
