@paekakboyz You do on Netflix too! HD and 5.1 should be a minimum from all platforms, whether it be streaming or satellite.
To be fair to Netflix the HD pricing may be more but it also gets you an additional screen (which let’s face it a load of people share).
Netflix is also a damn sight cheaper. Not apples with apples but even the most expensive Netflix plan is still just chump change.
Without a doubt Sky has dug themselves into a massive hole by not investing in new technologies. Hardly alone in that respect, but they're now in a position where replacing everyone's boxes is too expensive so they're stuck until they (probably) move away from them altogether.

@no-quarter Yeah I think Netflix is well priced, think I pay under $20 for 3 devices and HD, whereas I was gettign HD on Sky cos I was paying $25 a month for multi room, so canned the latter.
But Sky have had thier head in the sand for far too long they are so far behind it will be so costly for them to catch up.
Ultimately we will end up paying more to stream through multiple platforms in the future, with some looking back and crying about when Sky used to supply it all in one place...what we are getting is what people have been crying out for, although TBF if Sky had been on the ball people wouldnt be canceling subscriptions in the thousands each week.

Pretty sure @JC is talking about sky q which last time I looked was quite a price hike over standard sky which chump me has... While paying extra for HD still and they still restrict you to only having the mobile app on two devices with one change a month and charging extra for 4 devices. Think our plan with standard plus movies, Internet and HD comes in at about 90 squid.

I've ditched sky, for the first time since I moved back to NZ, for using Rugby Pass and a VPN. RP had a ton more games, a six months highlights and full game back catalogue, and it costs less than a quarter the price. Watching live games not quite the quality of live sky, but it's still HD. I have no interest in anything on sky but rugby, and that's why they lost me - paying for shit I don't want.

You’re right Bones, it’s Sky Q. And yes it’s more expensive but the point is at least they have the tech available. The way I see it companies like them either have to compete on price or tech. If they can do both hey great, but at least have some kind of differentiation. Sky NZ has neither. They’re expensive (which I admit I don’t care about but I recognise most do) and we’ll behind the tech curve.
The other thing about Sky is that they and TVNZ have tied up the rights to a lot of TV archive that either they don’t make available or if they do it’s at very low quality. The NZ Apple TV doesn’t even have a TV app as there is no content, and the number of shows on Prime or Netflix overseas that you simply can’t access over in NZ isn’t funny. So in effect they’ve locked up content and only have a poor quality delivery channel compared to the competition.
Edit: just looked at the bill, for Sky Q it’s £90.50 per month without internet cost but with one Sky Q Mini. NZ cost is $154.96.

Over the next 12 months, Sky plans to launch an array of cheaper options designed specifically to appeal to users who have made the transition from linear television viewing.
We've had this discussion before. I'm not going to defend Sky as they have been too slow to adopt new technology. They still made a decent profit with the big churn in customers.
The problem is that people now expect everything for nothing, which is not going to happen with Sports content, particularly in a small market like NZ. Spark's entry into sport could be a game changer or blow up big time if they aren't able to deliver.

as always, I think Sky are taking the wrong approach to these things, without going down the path of the fact they have been much to slow to react to the different ways people want to view thier content.
To me it sounds like they just want to plug this hole to try to regather subscriptions rather than work on supplying a better product and service.

The Sky situation is different because the sport and HBO shows they broadcast are either live or released at or near the same time as in the US. The piracy is due to cost with consumers not willing to pay for something they can get for free. So in that respect it is theft.
TVNZ and TV3 often own the rights to TV shows and delay showing them or sit on them for months until broadcasting at a later date. So fuck 'em.

@majorrage Yup. Look at TVNZ on Demand for example. Some shows are 'express' which means they are showing them pretty much the following day from when they are broadcasted in the US or UK or wherever. Which is cool. But other things are so far behind it is ridiculous. Like on Monday night they showed the penultimate episode of Lucifer S3. This aired May 7 in the US.

Just got an email from Sky about pricing changes.
Sky Starter up $1.08
Sky Entertainment up $0.50
Sky Sport up $2.09But the really interesting part is they are dropping the $9.99 HD charge from 1st April. That is excellent, but bullshit they charged for that previously. We don't have entertainment so that's a $6.82 drop to our monthly bill. They've also said they are increasing the number of channels coming through in HD.

I've just signed up with Kayo sports in Australia and it is simply outstanding. $25.00 a month for what seems to be all foxtel sports which you can stream to up to 2 devices simultaneously. These devices can be at different IPs so I've gone halves with a mate. Not only can you watch the games live in HD but you can also watch them delayed and they also offered extended highlights videos.

@Paekakboyz thing is, they have lost so many customers, it will take alot more to attract many of them back.
