Call me a doomsdayer but that backline feels very much like a '99/'00 backline. Looks like a Rolls Royce on paper and certainly has the ability to click - but that is far from a guarantee especially when it matters.

The least charitable description of the backline currently is three guys who are liable to freelance and compound mistakes under pressure, a halfback who has been spinning his wheels all international season, a guy dubiously coming back from glandular fever in a matter of weeks and two world class wings.

This isn't to say Barrett isn't a top player, SBW can still have his moments and Smith for most of his career has been sublime - but like the 99/00 teams they could turn it on (especially off set piece and counter attack) but could be frustratingly impotent at times when it mattered.

Prediction: they either flog them 20+ or it's 3.

    100% agree

I'm really not enamored with SBW these days. I'd be surprised if Goodhue and anyone outside him gets any decent ball other than through the "omg never expected that" 1 handed offload in contact. And I'd much prefer ALB on the bench to Crotty.

But its McKenzie I'm most worried about / interested to see. I hope he either has an absolute blinder and proves me wrong in my view that he's just not up to international football at 10 or 15, OR that he has a complete disaster and we dont see him in the 23 again for big games.

I’m really looking forward to seeing McKenzie run across field. Will it be once, twice or perhaps three times

Ben Blair must look back in shock and awe that the ABs have picked a fullback even smaller than him !

Damn, DMac is the reverse Ardie, he gets smaller and smaller each game.

@booboo I would have to check, I don't think you did. You did suggest we might have two midfielder being injured and I suggested the third might not have the full fitness to play 80.

bit of a loooong wait for this match, in real time and the build up this week!

Hate to think what next week will be like if we get rolled, shades of 2007?

'king hell. I'm at Twickenham on Saturday on a corporate invite and have just had an email asking which white wine I'd prefer....

                          I think (think) @mikethesnow was suggesting a margin between 16 and 21. Five points isn't a 'canter'.

The argument he makes seems to make more sense with Beaudy at fullback and Richie and first-five. Having two points of attack to take the defence's focus off one is a great idea in theory, but if the English defence start forcing Barrett to make errors I expect McKenzie to as well. When the poor option taking happens it seems to be contagious with those two.

I suspect that might be the longer term plan , but want to ease Richie into it ,

In this game he will get game time at 10 , Beaudy back to FB ,

I would not be surprised to see him starting next year and McKenzie back to the bench

I'm really not enamored with SBW these days. I'd be surprised if Goodhue and anyone outside him gets any decent ball other than through the "omg never expected that" 1 handed offload in contact. And I'd much prefer ALB on the bench to Crotty.

I hope he either has an absolute blinder and proves me wrong in my view that he's just not up to international football at 10 or 15, OR that he has a complete disaster and we dont see him in the 23 again for big games.

Interesting Shag saying , we want to play two playmakers ,

The argument he makes seems to make more sense with Beaudy at fullback and Richie and first-five. Having two points of attack to take the defence's focus off one is a great idea in theory, but if the English defence start forcing Barrett to make errors I expect McKenzie to as well. When the poor option taking happens it seems to be contagious with those two.

I suspect that might be the longer term plan , but want to ease Richie into it ,

In this game he will get game time at 10 , Beaudy back to FB ,

I would not be surprised to see him starting next year and McKenzie back to the bench

                                  Yes, rather worrying.

Also the following year when Caleb Ralph had a shocker too.

Tu'inukuafe is much better (and bigger) than McDonnell. I won't even mention that Cantablack no.8.

Besides, Mitchell is in the other camp this Sat. 🙂

I'm not convinced SBW is better than Keith Lowen
