It would be an awesome thread too, just watching something with Halle berry in it she won an award for her breasts after being in that otherwise shit movie swordfish -

No no no no no no. No.
There's something incredibly irritating about him , the only thing I ever liked him in was the excellent film My boy jack. He was machine gunned to death . -

To be fair though, I used to think of McConaughey as a pretty vapid creep who only took on movies where he could show his abs.

The series was awesome because it had a good story, good writing, and good acting. Fucking Colin Farrell? jesus.

Woody was hardly a shining light before that series, I mean come on, the star of Zombieland & Woody on Cheers for 6 years versus Farrel from In Bruges & 7 Pscyhopaths?

Part of the enjoyment of TD was that the actors were delivering great performances that felt a bit like a surprise (McConahey was cast in that long before he delivered Dallas Buyers.

Its one of those TV shows that lets actors who don't generally rate as outstanding step up & show what they can do. Like House of Cards where people had more or less forgotton what a fricking great actor Spacey is. Or Dexter when Lithgow was in it & you'd got so used to seeing him in 3rd rock you'd forgotten he was excellent.

If I were looking for cast for TD2 I'd look who go best supporting actor 15 years ago & then spent a long tiime as the voice of annimated chickens in Pixar films.

So Nic Cage & John Cussak then.
-

This post is confusing the fuck out of me.

Woody was awesome in Zombieland, Lithgow was excellent in 3rd Rock and who forgot Spacey was a good actor anyway?

Edited for accuracy .

Something about Farrell irritates the shit out of me, could be the hordes of hot women he's laid or the huge amounts of money he's earned but it stops me from seeing why people rate him. Total recall sucked despite having two hot female leads fighting and shooting things so I put that 100% down to him.
Margot robbie and Sophia Vergara should be the leads in the next series. -

More that both Lithgow & Woody had become comedy actors, if you look at Lithgow a huge chunk of his career is he goofing about getting laughs. Then he gets cast as a full on serial killer. The4re are very few actors who can do successful comedy & switch to doing really hard core drama. Imagine "True Detective 2, Adam Sandler & Ricky Gervais"

While Spacey, look at the 90s - LA Confidential, Usual Suspects, American Beauty, Seven.

Then he has 13 years doing abysmal stuff that gets zero interest & eventually ends up running the Old Vic in London & doing stage acting. Sreriously, his biggest profile roles in the last 5 years are bit part in Horrible Bosses & the vopice of Lex Luthor in "Superman, the video game". This is a guy who in the 90's was legitimately the best dramatic actor anywhere. Then nothing.

Edward Norton would be a good call too. 1990's - Primal Fear, Fight Club, American History X. Then 10 years later he is so bad he destroys Hulk as a franchise for 5 years & he has movies going straight to DVD.
-

Meh, good comedy acting is good acting and Woody has had lots of dramatic roles in recent years. As for Spacey he choose not have much of a movie profile when he went to the Old Vic.
-

Spacey noted in a number of interviews that he was going to decrease his movie roles because he didn't want to just be that guy chasing blockbusters ... which was why Spacey took the Old Vic role.

Unlike Black Spacey did actually work during that time, furthermore Black had basically stopped writing for half a decade before Kiss Kiss Bang Bang which was the first movie he directed.
-

Woody has played a far greater range than Colin-no comparison.Colin shows his dramatic range best in a phone booth and no way could he play a German queen like Woody.

As for Spacey he is Hollywood gold, Nepia is right he moved to stage *(like Kevin Kline) because he preferred it.
-

Bollocks, Shane Black had 3 disasters in a row then KKBB, then he was dead in Hollywood, he didn't take a break, Hollywood stopped taking his calls -

http://www.esquire.com/blogs/culture/redemption-of-shane-black

"Cue screeching brakes. Blamed for those last two expensive bombs, Black, whose screenplays once triggered frenzied bidding wars, suddenly found his phone calls went unreturned.

As Black's career stalled out, Downey tore through a couple dozen post-Chaplin movies while cultivating a nasty cocaine habit that landed him in prison.

In 2005, Black scraped up backing from his Lethal Weapon consigliore Joel Silver to make a sly noir thriller called Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Downey had served his time and was ready to work, but mainstream filmmakers steered clear. "

While Spacey pre Old Vic did 3 trainwreck films, and then had 10 years doing cameos. So yeah... I'm sure the decision to go to the old Vic had nothing to do with him no longer getting the leads he wanted.

At least we've moved on from the idea that comedy acting is the same as dramatic acting & I can stop contemplating Paul Rudd & Tracey Morgan in True Detective 3
