The lawyers and the judge are all working within the framework of the law. I don't doubt the judge could have put a harsher sentence on her... but still not that harsh. Little actually made an OK comment that the law hasn't been reviewed in a long time so maybe it should be. I agree, I'd like to see way fucking tougher sentences for reckless driving like this.

The only punishment she is likely to face is a little cyber outrage. Even that won't last, as people move to the next thing

@no-quarter yeah nah...in my old job I used to see Judges summing of cases in relation to charges following a Motor Accident (some fatal) and it would seem many motor 'incidents' seem to be looked at in a different light than similar result from non-motor incidents...as per the Lawyer statement 'it was an accident' regardless of being under the influence, where it should not be an accident (although that might where you are correct in that as it involved a vehicle, it is deemed a motor 'accident')

Worst one I saw (as mentioned earlier) was from a fatality, a dude and his mate had been racing and overtaking have hit and killed a guy on his way home from a Tangi...Judge said he felt Home Detention was harder for him than prison time due to being a prisoner in your own home (with fridge of food, alcohol, TV, Sky, PS$/Xbow, mates visit etc)

Indeed. In that regard it's not unlike the cricket test series across the ditch.

@jegga anytime you drive a vehicle while under the influence and crash, it should never be considered an 'accident'

If someone was out hunting while under the influence and accidentally shot another person, would that still be deemed an accident and therefore be granted home d?

so this article says she was 'drunken'.. but the next one says she wasn't, had just had something to drink earlier in the way.. something that thousands of people do every day - and is legal...
which was it? pretty important point.. cause one is 'ok to drive' one is 'should not have been in a car'.

Also, although she's obviously a piece of sh*t.. i also look to the 'first infringement'.. which was the kid went through a red light. I think people are missing that.

as a cyclist i'm pretty adamant you go thru a red and get hit it's your fault - and it's a pretty shtty situation to put a driver in who now has to deal with your sht decision.

As the mum of the kid said, she had a lot of sympathy for the girl. It was all those instagram posts that turned the tide of opinion against her. Tasteless, remorseless, millenially stupid

@williethewaiter she is under 20, zero limit?

So 'drunk' might be overstating it...although if she had a few drinks and some weed, you'd have to think that has influenced her ability to drive safely, as evidenced by running a red light and pissing off as well.

We will never know how drunk she was because she didn’t contact the cops until the next day after driving off and leaving the kid to die.

I think what has riled everyone up is the fact she drove off and gave little thought or care for the boy she hit.
Add to that the tasteless Instagram posts and you have yourself a villain.
If she did the right thing from the start then I’m sure 95% of the hate wouldn’t have happened. The parents would have likely forgiven her too.

the cyclist went thru the red not her? I've seen it reported that she did as well though..
basically teh reporting is shithouse across the board!
the court has decided the facts, and i guess that's why she got what she did... as I said she sounds like a piece of sh*t but that doesn't come into sentencing..

Turkeys and Eagles don't generally hang out together (except at dinner time), her and her mates are clearly in the gobbler group
