@booboo Mia is bitter in Hebrew and mine in Italian. Maia is from Greek mythology meaning mother. Nina is little girl in Spanish or pretty eyes in Hindi and was a Babylonian goddess. Ariana seems to come from the Sanskrit word Aryana meaning land of the Aryans.
Calling them Maori names is a rather long stretch.

It's not a long stretch to call a Maori name a Maori name even if it is also a name in another language. Personally, I've never come across Nina as a Maori name before but Ariana and Maia are fairly common.

I don't get your point. Languages develop differently/independently, that doesn't mean that a language that develops later can't use a word (more accurately the spelling of a word) that has already developed in a previous language.

@Mokey I'm with Nepia on this one You yourself give as an example the same word (Mia) having totally different meanings in two different languages where they developed separately. Not much of a stretch to believe what happened twice could also occur a third time.
Personally I'm bemused as to why we have a separate Maori List. Why not just the 10 most popular names - or nine and Dogmeat

Why do we have cis-gendered lists?
With regard to the ambiguous are they aren't they Maori names just because they don't have a B, C, D, F, J, L, Q, S, V, X, Y or Z does not automatically make those names Maori.
Nina for example. I googled "Nina meaning Maori" and didn't get much other than it was imported from Eastern Europe and Russia in the 19th century ...
Am not saying it can't be Maori, just seems to me that a common usage would not be.
