50 Years of Star Trek - RIP

@taniwharugby Apart from a couple of flat episodes, The Orville has been pretty good this year. They are better at telling one major story per episode, and creating relatable characters.

yeah a few in S1 were flat too
Season 2 has a higher "good ep" hitrate so far, IMO. I think that any sci-fi show that does old Trek style "idea of the week" stories is going to be a bit hit or miss. The "misses" are a lot better with a good cast of characters though.

BTW @Kirwan, you might be interested in this:
It's Michael Piller's short book about how his production of Star Trek: Insurrection went wrong, despite best intentions from all involved. Pretty good outline of how movies are made (from the writing and planning, rather than filming, point of view).

How can you fuck up the Talosians? They look terrible, the originals were played by woman with male voices, and looked creepy as fuck.
These generic aliens look awful.

@Kirwan The two are very similar. Despite little change in the squad/crew etc, we get some hopes up at the start of the seasons anyway.
Especially when you can see pieces of a great series. Just do the Pike prequel series on the Enterprise, and blatantly copy the episodic structure (and focus on story and characters) of The Orville.
