Been off sick from work, so have been doing a bit of movie watching, especially with the Oscar nominations out.

Boyhood- Yeah good film, don't quite think it lived up to the hype. Unique, a great achievement, but never grabbed me. It wasn't that sort of film, certainly worth a watch though. Really long. 7.5/10

Whiplash- Liked it, JK Simmons kills. Great subject material, good music, decent enough plot if a little predictable. 7/10

Birdman- Good movie, a real movie-makers movie. Direction was great, plot had its ups and downs, probably went 20 minutes too long for me. 8/10

Interstellar- How is this not nominated? Bloody great film. First hour is a bit slow, but the payoff is worth it. Really enjoyed this, despite the length. Nolan is a master. 9/10

Foxcatcher - Good film, but slow in parts. The performances are all excellent but it's a wonder that Carrell and Ruffalo were nominated for Oscars but Tatum wasn't.

About to read the book it was based on.

Watched "The Wolf of Wall Street" last night. If the idea was to create a picture of a bunch of douchebags being excessive, then they achieved it. I laughed a lot, but stories of drug abuse and hubris tend to lose me after a while. And then when the main character is basically brought down by narcissism, i found i got to the end of the movie not really caring. Anyway, the sequel is him making a shit-ton more money, and not paying back anything that he was supposed to, so the moral was fairly ambiguous.

Plenty of quality nudity on display. That Margot Robbie looks pretty fucking good with her kit off.

The Interview - I've heard this film get some bad wraps and I really don't understand it, it was bloody good. I thought it was a crack up, the interplay between Rogan and Franco was great as was the interplay between Franco and the guy who played Kim. The effects were really good too, there is one shot that would put most action movies to shame.

Anyone else seen Pride, the movie about gay activists in London in 1984 raising money and supporting the striking Coal Miners in Wales? It is a bit warm and fuzzy at times, yet still pretty inspirational and intense at others. I did laugh a fair bit at the interactions between the various groups. Worth a watch.

The mrs saw it and said it was really good, the trailer looked fairly excruciating so I avoided it.

Even Shai LaBoeuf was good in it. As you said, awesome.

finally got around to watching Seal Team Six, Th eHunt for Bin Laden (or whatever it is called)

Done documentary style (unsurprising given it was a NatGeo thing) was ok, always hard to tell with these movies how much they under/over play stuff.

Not as good as Zero Dark Thirty, but a decent watch none the less with a few recognizable faces scattered about.

LaBoeuf was almost unrecognisable I that film, he did well. The three on one scene with the tiger was hard to watch , seeing the vets on the DVD extras was great too.

Saw This is The End today. That is one weird-assed movie, between Jonah the possessed, Channing the gimp and a grand finale with the Backstreet Boys. Nice axe work from Emma though.

Whiplash - I was a bit worried going into this film that it wouldn't live up to the hype, and frankly I was wondering if I would be sick of the kid who is in it as he's in everything these days! But it lived up to the hype. JK Simmons was really good in it, the kid was good, for the Jegga scale there was a pretty girl in it for a while, the drumming was really good. I have heard some people think the storyline is predictable (just checked above in thread and Barbarian was one of them) but I don't agree, I was expecting it to play out like the standard mentor/student relationship style film and it didn't in the least.
