@Yeetyaah One or two games for Canes and he played for the 20s last year which would make him one of the more experienced in the squad. Surely you go with experience when you have very little across the squad.

I hope I'm right in the fact he's coming back to the Canes for injury cover after what looks like a season ending injury to his bro.

The FoxSports website detailing player's super rugby experience has Billy Proctor listed as having played one super rugby match clocking up a total of one minute of experience. You will see him listed as player number 564 on page 29 for conformation (right or wrong?) of this. If this is correct then he has, for all intents and purposes nil super rugby playing experience.

@Higgins 13 games of NPC, been in and around Super Rugby and played for the team last year. You say he might not be good enough, but a 5 year Super Rugby contract says he makes the squad all day, every day.

Like I said, I will welcome him back into the Canes if Philpott continues to butcher our World Cup chances, no wonder we got a hiding from Australia.

Is that 8 forwards on the bench and no backs? Do the trial substitution laws apply?

Yep, Billy Proctor came on in the 81st minute of the Waratahs v Hurricanes game. He was also named in the reserves for the Sunwolves v Hurricanes game, but never came off the bench.

@Higgins The guy is 20 years old, he's in the Hurricanes environment to learn from the likes of his brother before he is ready to make the step up, so no he doesn't make that squad all day. every day.

Under 20s is a different story - he is competing with a bunch of guys his own age (the majority of who have significantly less experience than him). It's odd that you think he isn't good enough to be there. Maybe you've been hanging out with Philpott too much.

Billy Proctor and Quinn Tupaea are probably competing for the same spot in the squad, centre. Tupaea had a far more notable NPC season last year than Billy. About the same number of games, and the same age.

@Canes4life Billy Proctor is good enough; he just has to wait his turn. I'm surprised you still don't know how it works in U20s tournaments. Every player gets game time; rotation etc etc. The best players in their position will only get picked ahead of their competitors in the finals.

@Stargazer I never mentioned Proctor shouldn't be there instead of Tupaea, I'm saying he should be atleast in that 23, I also said maybe they aren't risking him against the weaker teams in an earlier post, so yes I do know how the Under 20s works.

@Stargazer I agree. Tupaea was insane last year. I watched a bunch of games and didn't see the same impact from Proctor if we're comparing the 2. Could also be bias from me as I'm a Waikato supporter as well.

Looking at those squads, the Georgians have a bench of 13 players, in line with the new (trial) rules for U20s. I suspect they have just forgotten to include the players with the jersey numbers 24 to 28 on the NZ bench, because maybe their website person isn't aware of those new rules (assuming the NZ coaches aren't that stupid)? So @Canes4life beloved Billy Proctor may still be on the bench.

I assume Georgia will pack a decent scrum. is there a chance we could belly up against these guys..?

Quite likely - if we deviate from the detailed tactical plan that I've outlined above! 🙂

Is that 8 forwards on the bench and no backs? Do the trial substitution laws apply?

@ARHS thought that bench was weird when I posted it from the All Blacks website. I see it has been corrected now.

Dallas McLeod seems to have the trust of Philpott despite his underwhelming Pacific Tournament. Can Scott Gregory play at 2nd five ?

I will reserve judgement but this team could struggle to get out of pool play. Will be a massive reliance on Flanders as a ball carrier and wings to create magic every time they touch ball. Just can’t see this team creating pressure for long periods of time or creating enough consistent space for outsides. This is mainly to do with lack of game managers in half’s and big ball carriers in forwards. Hope I’m wrong 🙁
