England are still struggling to find top order batsmen who can cope with the new ball - Roy may blast some runs in the Ashes but generally going for your shots on the first morning will get the slips excited. Bairstow's innings was just weird, being warned for batting so far out of his crease that he was "running on the pitch" and then bowled through the gate with a big drive.

They are all still drunk from last weekend. And rightly so

Aus no better with the bat, their internal match is a wicketfest

Only 4 of the players actually played in that final ...

Going to be a great day tomorrow - Ireland with a real chance of the upset but it will be a tricky chase with a lot of pressure.

That pom test team looks weak. Reminds me of us when we were trying all sorts of first class players.
Aus favourites on personnel and test experience

    Interesting stats

Root as non-captain 53 tests, batting average 52.80
Root as captain 28 tests, batting average 42.48

Kane as non-captain 48 tests, batting average 49.23
Kane as captain 24 tests, batting average 63.69

Kohli's numbers are 41.13 and then 62.70 as captain
Smith is 51.83 and then 70.36 as captain

My hunch is Ireland will find 200 (and the pressure) too much.
Their own first innings batting collapse may be costly, left their number 5 stranded on just 28 not out.

    But here's hoping.

I agree - I think 200 will be too far. But, as you say, here's hoping.

So, I just copied your post. Good for me. I will say if the pitch flattens out, and the openers can see off the hard ball, that 200 is very very gettable. So maybe I am optimistic... will take some disciplined batting for an hour, and then it'll be game on for Ireland.

Imagine winning your first test in less than 20 odd years of, admittedly war-interrupted, trying.

    It took us:
20 years to win our first test.
30 years to win our first away test.
45 years to win our first test v England.
50 years to win our first test in England.
66 years to win our first test at Lords.

It also tookmus until after the 1973 series in England to get 5 day tests out of the MCC when playing them

Ireland are collapsing faster than a Wallabies scrum.

Jaysus, out for 38. Didn't see that coming. Well done the poms, but gutted for the Irish; that was a golden opportunity. Chase 180 and it's all glory, but they just fell apart

Bit of rain produced a wicket that favoured the ball. Always going to be tough as it went on and Root had a go at the surface after the game

Shame, I loved watching this guy bowl. Always had that slightly unhinged look in his eyes and he was as good as anyone.

Yep that's Hadlee standard and remember Steyn played when anything under 30 is pretty outstanding.

Proof you don't have to be 6'+ to be quick.
