That doesn't make much sense - the Canes have what, three players (by my rough calculation) in the team (including none from the top team in the region/country). The population of the region is nearly 1m.

Before I get mobbed it is always hard to pick schools teams because of the geography and the fact that games between players competing for spots are rare unless they are in same comp.
In terms of hurricanes representation and more specifically Wellington I just don’t think Wellington schools rugby is very strong atm (hate begins) scots got comprehensively beaten by Hastings. Even go down to u15 and Wellington college and st pats town came 15/16 out of 16 teams at one comp while st pats silverstream came down the bottom half of hurricanes tournament (they were top of their comp).
The biggest surprise is some of sth island (whom I know reasonably well) selections which is more than in previous years. 4 from CBHS is ridiculous! Lopas and can understand even Max Hughes (although I think others in NZ have played better) other two I just don’t see how. Also two from St Andrews who as a team imploaded this year to finish 7th!! Although I see they have a member (or ex) as a skills coach iso wonder if that played a part.
Will Gualter I like and can see why as well as Segner and
In the end I assume that selectors know who is available and have had a good look at tapes/ live games.

IIRC, I think they picked the main team that was mainly Year 13s, and the Baabaas were mainly Year 12s.
So if they are Year 11, I'm assuming that's why they weren't picked.
That was in the past, so not sure if it's still the same.Does anyone have a breakdown of the Year Levels of the players?

Yes, I have a chance for more outrage, by many you mean one? Add this to your population projection for the Canes region and it seems you have a trumpian outlook on size and numbers.

They aren't just judged on their school games. There's camps, and provincial games etc.
But going to a big school is a massive bonus. We recently had a student at my school that should have been in the secondary school team, but didn't go to the right school. He made it to U20 squad, once free of that problem.

@Chester-Draws I agree as I am also involved in schools rugby as well and have seen this a lot. 20s is where players should be aiming for not schools. What I was pointing out was the camps are a snapshot in a very short space of time. If you do not perform there that maybe your only chance so unless you are at a big school that is on tv or you are playing g a player regularly that you are in competition with it would be hard to make team.

8 from Crusaders region schools in the top team is a pretty high representation. 30% or thereabouts. Zero from any Highlanders region schools but four from there in the Barbarians side. Two from my Dad's old school John McGlashan and one each from Kings HS and OBHS. It'd be pretty rare for OBHS to not have the greatest proportion of players, of Dunedin schools.

There has been some delay in the team naming of the NZ Māori U18 squad, today. I guess there was an unexpected abundance of choice after the NZ Schools and Barbarians Schools team naming. I'm keen to find out how many players from Hastings and Hamilton BHS will end up in this squad.

It's amazing what a good program can do (when its like mens and all the best talent ends up at the best schools). I use to ref the hastings girls games back in the early 2000's I would call them off with like 20 minutes to go as a sign of mercy they were honestly that bad. Good sign for girls rugby where a lot of them don't start playing until high school and don't pick there schools based on the rugby teams (im sure some do but not as large a % as boys rugby)
