    Ok. Picked Cane.

Will be an interesting year next year huh?

we would need a back up plan if we go with Cane, I think his neck injury may have taken a bigger impact than we may know and could possibly see his career finish earlier than maybe expected - hope to be proved wrong

and maybe just throwing it out there, but what if the next AB World Cup captain has not played for the All Blacks yet? Would there be any potential candidates?

    Coles as Captain? 🤔

Has he done it before? TBH he's a bit of a cock so not sure he's your man

Could be the making of him, though.

I actually think he could be a good stop gap. I don’t think our next long term captain will come from this bunch, to be honest. They’ve either been tried and not come up to the mark (Whitelock, Retallick) or have question marks over their longevity (again, Whitelock, Coles) or indeed their unchallenged place in the starting 15 (Cane).

So, yeah, I’d go for Coles, with probably Whitelock as my vice who can take over on the field of Coke’s gets hooked.

Please no Whitelock. It's time to start a fresh and with the next breed. Sam's had 3 world cups and just didn't look like he was up there anymore last weekend. Itoje & Lawes both overshadowed him.

I don't know who it should be honestly. I would have said Sam Cane, but I think he's more leadership group than leader.

    So, I don't know. Not a clue.

Yeah both Sams out of the frame for mine. Whitelock’s lack of composure and ill discipline on the weekend rule him out for me (especially so given he is a 100 test veteran).

Cane would have been my choice, but I’m not sure how long he’s going to last given his injuries and question marks over his place in the team.

next squad annoucement is going to be the most interesting in years

i bet it's not (easy to say now, 7 months in advance!!)

Who do you see, who isn't retiring, being realistically left out? Especially by a new coach in a bedding-in process?

Hey remember when Jonno Gibbes became an AB In 2004....

They have all played for the ABs, but Atu Moli, Dalton Papali'i and Luke Jacobson were Captains of NZ-age grade teams.

Certainly some players rise to the occasion - James Horwill at the Reds lost some of his dickhead factor when given leadership.

@NTA who knows, but a decent part of being a good cap is rapport and reputation with the refs, and i reckon he did some damage to his brand this year.

I don't think there is so far down that path you can go without fixing it up.

Redemption and perseverance and all that shit

Consider who England have had: Hartley, then Farrell.

Dane Coles is a well-behaved choir boy by conparison.

    @sparky yeah true

I still think you'd have Whitelock or Cane well ahead of him

I’d go Whitelock then transition to Jacobson in a couple of years. I thought he had presence as a captain when I saw him in the U20 champs.

I do, and we better be talking about him with the appropriate respect! That was a cracking selection.

(He was actually a bit of jerk at high school, but the Gibbes are good people, and his brother is a legend)

@mariner4life hero in his own lunchbox 😀

In all seriousness I was a fan of Gibbes, but his selection to start at blindside in Henry’s very first test was an eyebrow raiser to say the least.

Didn’t make the 2003 RWC squad and can’t recall him even being in the mix prior to the WC.

I reckon we will see a few surprises both ins and outs.

It wasn't really an eyebrow raiser, he'd been performing well for a number of years in Super rugby but Mitchell favoured the Suitcase over the competition, and it was just before Collins switched fully to 6.

That was a very experimental time for our loose forwards with Rush, Tuialili and Newby also getting runs.

Gibbes hung around the squad long enough to get 4 mins against the Lions in 2005. 🙂

The 80 mins for the Maori against the Lions is what I'll remember Jono by in a black jersey. Looking down and out through injury but taking the final lineouts was the stuff of legends. He was more of a lock by then.

It was an eyebrow raiser. In fact both him and Xavier getting those starting spots. Not that they weren’t bad, but that Rodders wasn’t brought back in which surprised many given he was left out for the WC squad having made the ABs that year and was playing well.
