It's got to be Jamie Joseph. Just imagine the fast way Japan play, yet with more power. And equal passion. It matches the way the All Blacks should play, like an unstoppable swarm through the forwards, combined with big fast wings and FB, and with great all round backline skills that break open defences like a hot knife through butter.
-kick catching, kicking for territory should be practiced to a higher level.

Couldn't Rennie be involved as well, forwards coach, as well as talent spotter throughout the provinces?

I am wary of Robertson, becuse he does lack experience, and now is missing Tony Brown - I think that has hurt him cos he is now looking for someone to go with - not ideal. I really like the idea of him coming in as assistant with a view to taking over in 4 years, JJ with Tony B and Robertson I'd love + specialist coaches

@Machpants Except Robertson has said he isn't interested in being an assistant. He has limited his options by doing so.

I think that's really odd. Maybe it is just he knows he would be a PitA as assistant, a problem not a help. Otherwise it is a very well travelled path he is turning down, I reckon he'll have to do an overseas head coach first, unless he assembles a really good team

    @Machpants

When you say "well travelled path" you mean it's happened once? With Steve Hansen? Scott Robertson has has success at every level as a coach, at club, U20's, provincial and Super Rugby levels. Why would he or should he play second fiddle to an absolute pretender like Ian Foster who has never had any success as a Head Coach?

@Cantab79 well travelled path, as in doing a high level assistant coach before head coach. Around the rugby world, not just NZ.

The more I read the more it is obvious. Foster surely cannot get the job. Shouldn't you need to have success at some high level of coaching? How did he get into the All Blacks set up in the first place? If he gets it, it just seems to be real cronyism.

@KiwiMurph guess it all depends on the team they have around them.

We know Brown is part of JJs team, but who is Razor and Fozzie lining up to work with them?

Rennie not thrown his hat in or he lining up to work with one of them?

Or already with Oz? But yes, as per Henry, your coaching team is very important.

    how underwhelming.

JJ had 10 years coaching Super rugby and won once.

    Foster is a proven failure

Robertson has never even got a team to beat the Crusaders.

    Like Hansen then?

5 years NPC with 2 wins despite having the strength of Canterbury

2 years as an assistant with the Saders

33% win record as a head coach with Wales

How did he get into the ABs set up in the first place?

87% success with ABs as head coach despite no success at some high level of coaching.

Just trying to add some clarity around things.

I reckon JJ has the inside running at the moment for a couple of reasons.

Despite what I typed above he has shown an ability at international level and he has at least one key desirable coaching partner.

Hansen and continuity won out after Henry because there was value that could be seen in completing the transition of culture which was getting results. The alternatives were unproven at that time.

Is continuity required now? I would question what Foster is going to bring that differs from what has been shown within the Shag era. Do we need to continue something that hasn't finished yet? I don't think so.

I think that Robertson is going to be seen as young enough to go and get some international experience under his belt. He has already declared that he won't be an assistant so he either stays at the Saders proving nothing or takes up an overseas job. It doesn't have to be at a top tier country. If he can create good wins with a second tier (like JJ) he will be ready to come back.

I reckon either Scotland or Italy would be great for his future development.

Robertson extended his contract with the Crusaders and NZR until 2021; that was after he had expressed interest in the ABs head coach role. So if he doesn't get the top gig, he'll stay at least until after the 2021 SR season.
