    Root gone!

Santner looks about 6' 2" to me. Taylor is listed as 6' and he is taller than him. Southee is 6' 4".

@Bovidae normal inches? Or Ardie Savea inches?

Sat Nav and park cricket Colin. Contining in the long line of bits and pieces NZ cricket heroes.

There's a lot of foot marks outside Stokes' offstump for Santner to bowl into. Craig McMillan just making the point that it's more a right hander's pitch to bat on now.

Bits and pieces? He has a batting average close 40 and a bowling average of 30. Better than Stokes in both categories.

@mariner4life Just an eye test. Ardie inches requires a certain haircut as a measurement unit.

Been reading some commentary about Joe Root and how the captaincy is dragging him down brought up a fun question about best batsmen to never captain a side.

For NZ who would our best batsman who never captained the team be? Captain is defined as being the captain at the toss. So guys who only captained a couple of games when the regular captain was injured are counted.

I'm struggling to come up with names for the list. In recent times the only guys that come to mind are Astle and Richardson. Styris if we're counting ODIs.

Some of the older names might get in though. I don't think Donnelly, Dempster, Sutcliffe or Turner ever captained a test.

@Cyclops Without checking, I doubt either of Andrew Jones or John Reid the younger ever did.

But, even though they didn't play many tests, I'd tend to think those older guys you mention should rate ahead of any of the younger guys that any of us actually saw.

                        n.b. - pretty sure Turner captained for a while e.g. https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/17151/scorecard/63182/new-zealand-vs-australia-1st-test-australia-tour-of-new-zealand-1976-77

Edit - and shoulda refreshed my browser. Wright did for quite a while - between Coney and Crowe.

Didn’t get his as keeper did he?

Nope, all as a specialist batsman, free of the significant additional mental and physical fatigue of keeping wickets.

To answer this, BMac got 185 vs Bangladesh at Hamilton in 2010 so BJ has broken that record for a NZ wicketkeeper.

The other outrageous stat is that Watling has batted 16 h 16 min between test dismissals.

@Chris-B Turner was the captain between Congdon and Burgess.

It would have to be Dempster or Donnelly. Agree it would be Jones of the modern era.

Based on test runs it is Astle or Watling. Of the old-timers, Donnelly or Dempster for average.

Hadlee never captained NZ in a test either.

Stokes dragged on. I think we need at least another one this session.

I think 1/2/4 wickets per session is do-able, but it's asking a lot to get five in the last session with Denly, Pope and Buttler to get through - and Curran, Archer and Broad all able to hold a bat.

And Wagner clips Denly on the gloves caught behind given on review - here we go, here we go.

Would be great to get one more before tea!

Stokes dragged on. I think we need at least another one this session.

I think 1/2/4 wickets per session is do-able, but it's asking a lot to get five in the last session with Denly, Pope and Buttler to get through - and Curran, Archer and Broad all able to hold a bat.

                                          Agreed.

I was thinking this morning that the target would have been two wickets a session with 3 in the third. England would have given themselves a 'budget' of one in each session.

Got number two for the session! Denly caught behind off Wags.
