spot on re RSA Baron.

As some would know in my spare time I chair a NFP with over 4,000 business members and as such have been heavily engaged in submitting on their behalf to the hearings on Akl Councils proposed Unitary Plan.

One of our biggest issues is avoiding the temptation to believe we know best and to instead actively canvas the opinions of our members.

Of course we can never please everyone but we at least make a real effort to hear the view of all and fairly represent it.

RSA seem to have made a basic assumption on the wants of their membership which I think is probably accurate but ignores a sizeable minority. A minority that is big enough so that they should have resisted any of the grandstanding they're indulging in.

Wrapping yourself in the flag (sic) to promote anti-democratic behaviour is the anti-thesis of what they are trying to promote.

This whole issue sure has seen some bizarre alliances.
-
How old would the now of the rsa members be now? There'd be hardly any from ww2 a few from Korea and Malaya and the rest would be viet nam era wouldn't they? If the majority are from the viet nam era urs quite odd to see them getting behind the flag they fought for etc, we had a seperate club for viet nam vets the police and fire fighters because the local branch treated thd viet nam vets like they didn't belong.
-

anyone can join the RSA though cant they? pretty sure they did a membership drive recently?

-

I'm resigned to NZers voting to keep the current flag. Which I'll respect, but it will never be seen anywhere near my house. I live overseas, and I'll not be mistaken for Australian.

Anyway I've made my votes and I'll upload it tomorrow.
-

I'm still really disappointed we don't have a black flag with the silver fern on it.

Went blue/black, then red/black, then Koru.
-

I'm in Asia. Got mine last week.
-

so they expect the results to be in later tonight.

Prime Minister John Key, who launched the referendum process a year ago, said voter turnout was on course to overtake the last postal referendum in 2013, on the sale of state-owned assets.

"It shows you people are engaging," Mr Key said.

As of yesterday, 1,372,783 people had voted in the flag referendum. That amounted to 43.3 per cent of the voting population.

The turnout for the asset sales referendum was 1,368,925, or 45.1 per cent of the voting population at the time.

The most recent referendum on a constitutional issue, the MMP system, had a turnout of 74.2 per cent, though it was held at the same time as the 2011 general election.

Seriously? -

yeah they should just ditch it now, it's apparently abundantly clear NZ has spoken and we don't want a change in flag!

-

we have a winner: that was my choice, now need to think about whether I prefer that over the existing.

The greens co leader told him off for referring to moronic women who leave to join Isis as " jihadi brides" .
Because it's sexist to think that all a woman can be is a wife.

Our opposition parties are a joke , this is not a good thing long term for us -
While that was my first pick, I'm still not sold on the design at all. The Fern looks like a feather, and half the flag is just our current flag.

Very disappointing options to choose from. Why the fuck did we add fucking "red peak" as a 5th option instead of black with a Silver Fern? Agrh. -

still ALOT of numpties out there who have no idea whats going on...

comments like 'it's ok, but I prefer the current one' or 'but I prefer the current one' (like this is the new flag)

and then there are the standard 'waste of money' 'shoulda spent money on feeding kids'
-

I reckon at present it's about 60/40 split in favour of the current flag. 3 months is enough for the pro-change to mount a campaign, and for people to think about a new flag, but if I was a betting man I'd say a 55/45 final split is probably what will happen.

I'm like taniwha, anyone who drops the "money could have been better spent elsewhere" line loses my attention instantly.
-

At least Red Peak has fucked off.

Funny story about the 26 mill expenditure. My sister is a massive lefty who works in the govt. I asked her opinion on it, just for shits and giggles. Her opinion was:

"26 million is what the govt spend on social issues about every 30 mins. People who offer that have no clue what they are talking about and are just using it as an excuse to vote against it, without realising by voting for this reason, they are actually the anti-thesis of their own view"

Not often I agree with my sister.
-

I think the current flag will stay, but I also think it is a possibility that voter antipathy might skew the results compared to polling.
