We should bring Chris Harris in as a technical fielding advisor.

Agree, and possibly Steve Waugh as a technical winning advisor.

...and clones of the young Joel Garner and Michael Holding...and Curtley Ambrose for good measure! 🙂

This is all looking pretty familiar - Marnus and Smith batting us out of the game here. Even if we get one of them shortly, I doubt we'll have the venom to run through their middle order.

400+ is on the cards here and from then it will be very same same. The only tough decision for the Aussies will be whether they have the egg or tuna sandwiches for tea...

Our specialist spinners have taken roughly 1 for 350 in this series.

Give Jeet a bowl - he may as well do something in this game!

Need another one right now - get Wade in while the bowlers are relatively fresh!

Would’ve been nice 4 hours ago, but now Wade has raced to 20 with relative ease by the close of play...

@ACT-Crusader Yeah - exactly. And although I was only keeping a loose watch on things, I didn't really see us create a significant chance.

But, it was at a similar sort of point in Melbourne where Kane got a good run-out chance and couldn't convert - and that's pretty much the only opening the Australians have given us in this series.

The real interest in this match is going to be whether we can make a credible fist of batting on a slowish pitch in the first innings. That's going to require all of our big batsmen standing up, because we've got some serious holes in our batting line-up with Jeet and Phillips in the top order.

Second innings, I suspect Lyon will spin us out.

Gary Stead explains non selection of Tim Southee by saying that he wanted more speed. Seems to me he has tried this before and it hasn’t worked. Not sure he knows what he is doing.

Then he opens with CDG at 120km and he is the top wicket taker today.

Early in this test but this tour is already a disaster.

One thing I haven’t seen in the news articles - would Santner have been picked if he wasn’t sick?

We’ll probably never know.... but most likely based on some of the baffling selections we’ve seen in this series.

    I was out there today!
Expected a few more Kiwis but understand how underwhelmed the band wagon jumpers must be so it was only diehard supporters with scarred memories of days of yore!
The numbers and names on shirts (which I initially hated) were very helpful especially with the amount of changes to the team.
It was distressing enough when Henry opened the bowling but when CdG came rollicking in from the other end my only thought was where’s Southee?
FFS he’s taken the second most wickets in this series behind Wagner!
Guess we don’t know the whole story on that one.....
Raval looked really energised in the field early as did the rest of the side but it fell away noticeably as they day got longer.
As others have said everything else was déjà vu ......
Highlight of the day was Smith getting off the mark !!
I hadn’t been to a Test Match in ten years but used to go annually and had forgotten the two best things about real cricket live!

    1. No commentary! Just watching the match unfold whilst having a full view of where players are being moved in the field and trying to guess the next delivery! So good for the cricket brain as on radio we only ever visualise and on the box we are totally limited to the vision we are presented with!
    2. Hearing punters far more knowledgeable than you discuss the game. My two boys 21 & 23 were totally blown away by this! I follow cricket quite seriously and they are both keen but overhearing discussions on another level about cricket was very cool.
The boys were hoping NZ batted first!

It’s not going to be pretty but it’s giving some fringe players an opportunity to do something special on a big stage and the older statesmen a last chance to make a statement at the SCG!!

And although they had 14 styles of Aussie Cap in Merchandising the only headwear available for Kiwis was a Bucket Hat!!! I shit you not!!!
I had to buy one as I didn’t take any headwear with me as I intended to buy a cap!

    Wagner live was awesome 😎

It was Stead's decision to omit Southee

I'm watching Smithy on a pisstake show called The Professors Night Watchman. And he's killing it. Just a genuine, funny bloke.

    Fairly even first day.

Australia scored some runs but we knocked off the bulk of their batting.

We could potentially clean up the remaining 7 wickets this morning and be batting after lunch.

The plan from the Black Caps will be to bat big and bat once. Say we bowl out Aussie for 400 this morning then we should look to score 600 or so and then roll them in the second innings with our 2 pronged spin attack on a turning pitch.

Our path to victory seems fairly straightforward.
