Looking at the that Canes 'Magpies' 15 you can see why the Canes don't really bother picking Hawkes Bay players. That 15 wouldn't even make the semis of the NPC.

Wouldn’t you need to compare it to a “non canes” magpie team to come to that conclusion?

@Stargazer should be able to put one of those together pretty quickly. Would be interesting to see.

@Stargazer At the risk of offending @Canes4life again, FFS, the Canes really are taking the piss. It's one thing to have a senior team with barely any Magpies but an U20s team with less than the Poo even in an era where the Hawkes Bay high schools beat Wellington high schools like they're red head step sons is ludacris. Go fuck yourself Wellington Hurricanes. 🙂

You Bay boys are just talentless. That Hawkes Bay Canes XV is a joke. Learn how to develop your players better instead of pointing the finger at Wellington. To make matters worse you have two Wellington boys in that XV. 😂😂😂

@Nepia does it really matter where the players come from? You could always jump waka again until you find a regional base that's represented to your satisfaction.

Canterbury seems to have pretty good representation at all levels....

And indeed Hika Elliot at 2, but not Cory Jane in the XV, who played fullback for the Magpies. He's not getting that 15 spot from Cunningham.

What's this "you" business - that's a Wellington Canes chosen team, hence their ineptness in choosing a player who didn't play for the Magpies when he was in the Canes.

I'm good with my current waka who have been supportive of the Magpies over the years - compare this tight five: Sona, Hika, Ben T, Retallick and Allardice to that Canes one.

@Stockcar86 He played exactly one single game for the Canes, on 31 May 2014 when he came off the bench against the Blues. He is Hurricane #205.

                                      MEET THE PLAYER: DEVAN FLANDERS

Devan Flanders, like many before him, grew up with the goal of wearing the yellow and black Hurricanes jersey.

While for most, it’s a pipeline dream – Flanders had cracked it before even getting out of his teens.

From a rugby mad family in Hastings, Hawke’s Bay - the 20-year-old flanker first signed up to Havelock North Rugby Club at the tender age of four.

He says, it wasn’t long before he was hooked.

“We were always playing rugby when we could. Both my brothers, all my cousins and my dad played rugby and they love watching it too.”

Although, it was high school that Flanders really made a name for himself. Drafted into the Hurricanes Under-18’s squad he was also a pivotal part of helping Hastings Boy’s High to its first ever national title in 2017.

He then went on to play in the New Zealand Secondary Schools team and received the Jerry Collins Memorial Bronze Boot for most valuable player.

With awards racking up, Flanders began a meteoric rise through the senior rugby ranks which saw him play for Mitre 10 Cup team the Magpies before receiving his first professional contract with the Hurricanes for the 2020 season.

“It was always a dream of mine to play for the Hurricanes – in fact it was all I wanted to do when I was older, “Flanders says.

Flanders says making his debut against the Stormers in Cape Town was an incredibly proud moment.

“My family and I were so excited and nervous before that first game. It was a very surreal moment, where I could finally see how far I’d come in my career.”

And, despite having achieved his childhood goal of becoming a part of the Hurricanes, he’s now invested in learning everything he can from his teammates both on and off the field.

Interesting to see last year's Napier 1stXV lock Frank Lochore on the bench. I hope he's still in the Magpies Academy.
