Black Mass - excellent. Jonny Depp kills it, although I found the way he was made up - he looked more than a bit weird. Reminded me of the Tooth Fairy from Manhunter! Fat boy from Fargo 2 doesn't do it for me as a hoodlum.

It was refreshing how they didn't really glamourise him or his lifestyle as much as they usually do in gangster movies. Depp's character would scare this shit out of me if I met him in real life.

Agree that he was weird looking. However, after the movie I looked up images of Bulger and they weren't too far off. Maybe they went overboard on the eyes though.

Special Forces

French production I saw on Netflix. Saw it had Diane Kruger in it, and Djimon Hounsou, so figured it was worth a look.

Basic setup is reporter (Kruger) taken hostage in Kabul because she's a fucking idiot. A recon team of French SF guys flies out to observe, then intel comes through they have to move on target.
They are also fucking idiots, or the director is, judging by what kind of utterly un-SF shit they get up to. Firstly, they attack a compound, vastly outnumbered, in broad daylight, to rescue the hostage. Maybe time was a factor, but then they have no way of knowing that.

Firstly, they "drop" two of their radios in the main assault, and the other one (squad of 6 remember - only 3 comm units? Even short-range?) gets shot to shit. They don't appear to be carrying any trackable GPS and only have 1 EPIRB for the whole unit.

During their escape, they walk every fucking ridgeline there is, just so it looks glamorous and hardcore, when any sensible fluffybunny would keep his head below cover, and conceal movement. This is especially stupid when they get to a stream, then fail utterly to follow it to the nearest settlement, while also keeping a freshwater supply handy (I've seen my Bear Grylls).

Then, when they decide to hit back, rather than setting their sniper up to take out key elements in the chasing Taliban force (leaders, other snipers, etc) they let him stay with them. Similarly the squad support weapon, which could have cut those fucking Afghan fluffybunnys to pieces without breaking wind. During the same action, they have a perfect defilade (though the silly fluffybunnys are one grenade from being wiped out, being bunched together) but jump up and start advancing from it.

And last, they have under-barrel grenade launchers that aren't used once to even the odds, or even suppress the enemy.

If that is the French SF, its no wonder they fucking surrender so much.
It was watchable, because it was on Netflix, and filled in a couple of hours. And the production standards are pretty high, with nice cinematography and some beautiful backdrops.

Have a go if its free. DO NOT pay for it.

Spotlight: Good story with really good non showy performances (you fans of DDL ham will be disappointed ;)). There was no overly dramatic stuff.

In my rating of the Oscar nominees Revenant is is falling behind the Spotlights and The Big Short.

Of the ones I've seen I'd rate them:

The Big Short

Spotlight

The Martian

Bridge of Spies

The Revenant

Overrated Max.

I'm seeing Room on the weekend and am not that keen on Brooklyn but suppose I'll see it to be a completest.

Von Ryan's Express. Trains, Nazis, Frank Sinatra. Some pretty cool effects considering the age. Was quite surprised at the ending, even now that rarely happens, would have been revolutionary at the time (also, the shooting of a fleeing woman.)

Fucken EXCELLENT film, remember seeing that with my Granddad on a cold, rainy day. I'll give spoilers, fuck it, it's about a million years old, you should all have seen it. So hard to watch Franks character running for the train, so frustrating, in the same way in the original Back to the future where you're hoping Doc can connect the cables in time you really hope Frank can make it on the train.....it really got me at the time.

Someone mentioned Adam Sandler being in a Tarantino film, if I could legally kill someone he'd be extremely high on the list.

Deadpool ? fuck that superhero shit, does he really compare to Batman, the Hulk, Iron Man, Wolverine etc ? as a rule those movies are generally crapola, the only Dead Pool anyone should watch is the final Dirty Harry Movie ( which admittedly was quite crap )

Quite correct. Bizarrely enough he played a Rock star miming to "Welcome to the Jungle".

The original Dirty Harry is hands down one of the best fucken movies ever made, Clint, the bad guy, the script, the location, the music......EVERYTHING clicks into revolutionary movie making genius. The next two were very good and then the 80's hit and Dirty Harry pretty much turned to shit as is often the case.

My son and I watched the Gauntlet a while back, that was a decent mindless action flick. Also Sondra Locke gets her gear off.

Yeah that's an underrated Clint flick that is decent entertainment. I prefer chicks with slightly bigger assets than Sondra but each to their own, if you keep on like that I'll start calling you M4L.

In my opinion the best of his lesser known efforts that no one else has seen are Coogans Bluff and the Eiger Sanction.

Right. Dead pool. I found it very funny. It does very well to get you to root for a guy who is actually a complete and utter arsehole. Most of his superhero mates aren't much better than him either, all unlikeable shits. They're more like the scrotes in "Misfits" than the Avengers.

TR, not one for your young TRjr yet. The humour is very adult and relentless, and a lot of the violence is full-on, like if Itchy and Scratchy were made as a live action film.

I might go again.

Deadpool's trailer looked like the most cringiest thing I had ever seen. No one laughed at any of the jokes in the trailer when it was played before other movies. Then it goes and gets good reviews from most people. I will probably still skip it because I don't like superhero movies.

We're you watching The Danish Girl with the blue rinse crowd - every time I've seen the preview the crowd has cracked up. I ignore trailers, I hate them, they give too much away, so I don't know if it's funny personally.

There's a scene in the trailer where he cuts off a guys head and kicks it at the dead bad guys mates, that awesome on so many levels.
