@mariner4life the ratings say otherwise apparently.

From an article from November on NRL.

Greenberg said reverting to a system where teams finish with a draw if scores are locked up after 80 minutes was not on the table.

"No. There has been no discussion with me and certainly I have been a strong proponent for supporting the concept of golden point," he said.

"The numbers speak for themselves. When you get to the end of 80 minutes our ratings numbers on both broadcast partners go through the roof when we hit that (golden point) period.

"We understand what business we are in. We are in the entertainment business and we are going to continue to find ways to innovate the game and make sure fans are fully engaged with us."

@mariner4life the way I read that quote is the ratings during the golden point period of a game are higher than the ratings during the regulation (80 minute) period of same game.

i can't understand anyone turning on golden point, it's awful football. Two teams playing risk-free football to try and get close enough for shit field goal shot. The refs swallow the whistle and just allow offside after offside, especially on the field goal shot.

@mariner4life yeah that doesn't make sense. How do you know a game has gone golden point if you're not watching it? Prolly tuned in to watch the game after or the final result and got tricked.

Not sure I like the idea for super rugby but I guess that's the point. The excuse of making sure teams don't end up on the same points is rubbish though.

Who doesn't want to watch a sneaky dropped scrum for a penalty and then 40 hitups one off the ruck for a chance at a penalty or drop goal?

Why not just end with the scores tied and then the ref can say which team irritated him the most.

Golden try might be ok. But golden point can stay in league.

If you want entertainment value have a kicking competition like the final tie breaker in a RWC knockout match. Some of those players with low numbers on their jerseys fancy themselves as goal kickers.

I like this idea, with teams dropping a non-front row player every 2 minutes (and no replacements allowed).

What are we solving for? Why is splitting points so bad in a season-long comp? Do we desperately need a winner of every game, every week?

I am against the golden point proposal. Have seen some real travesties in cricket, league and soccer trying this. Very cruel, especially if one team has a fresh long-range drop-kicker to bring on, while the other team has a fatigued kicker whose hammy is slightly strained. A draw is a perfectly fair result. Just make sure that everyone knows the tie-breaker rules well before it counts. The team that has the most to lose will then take the greatest risks to win in the closing stages. The team more likely to progress on tie-breaker will be more conservative in comparison. I am happy with it that way - and none of the fan abuse that soccer piles on those involved in a losing shoot-out. This seems designed purely for TV ratings, regardless of impact on the players.

@voodoo haha yep, given there are reasonable methods to determine the victor if they are tied at the end of a long season (points for/against, Bonus Points, Tries scored, Cards and only then does it come back to the on field result isnt it?) I dont see why a game has to be determined on the field by something that is just as likely to come down to dumb luck or worse, cynical/negative drawing of a penalty, which they had 80 minutes to do already.

It's an insult to the intellect of the fan; you can only be entertained if there is a victor.

I can picture the outcry now if they didn't do a golden point and the winner of the Super Rugby Aotearoa was decided by for/against (I don't mean on the Fern).

I don't see the big deal with using this unique competition to trial some things.

Murphy's Law will probably mean there won't be any draws now (after 80 mins).

you're spot on. In a 5 team comp, the chance of 2 getting to the same points has to be high. Ironically, a draw may separate folk more than defined win/loss 🙂

Yeah, a team might win a match in golden point, which puts them on equal points as another team (who won in real time), then the golden point team might have more tries which is the tie breaker. So basically a team that had a draw might prevail over a team that had an actual 'win' on the table. That seems a bit messed up.

I didn't say guarantee but fair point.

I guess bonus points become a big factor - presumably you would get a losing bonus point as a golden point loser (for being within 7) but the winner would be very unlikely to get a winning bonus point (unlikely to have 3 tries more than opposition and end up in golden point)

I emailed Kayo (Fox) to ask if they're playing Aotearoa Super Rugby and they replied they don't have it.

                                        I hope it's just a rights negotiation thing ...

I would have thought they'd dying for content. That said, they're barely arsed to pay any cash for rugby featuring Australian teams, so why would they fork out anything for rugby featuring NZ teams only?
