    I thought this had already been announced? Or had it just been rumoured?

    @Nepia strongly rumoured until this announcement.

    I really hope with that title it’s back to exploration instead of the earth related stories they do these days.

    @Kirwan Probably the most accurate comment I've seen on the show, which came from a TV writer, was that much of it was at CW Network level quality and tone.

    @Tim lol. Ouch.

    The worst part is special effects have never been cheaper or looked better. So much scope for stories with pretty much no limits.

    Yet we keep getting Jesus saves the universe plots over and over.

    Strange New Worlds spinoff - producer Akiva Goldsman says it is a return to “classical Trek values” as well as episodic storytelling. Do you want sunshine despite the gloom outside your window? You’re gonna get it. He goes as far as to say, “Our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either Discovery or Picard.”

    The latest series is designed to appease those who've grumbled over the recent batch of 'Star Trek.'

    I've been burned before, they said Picard would be a smaller scope and be a character study. Instead we got ninja robots (and ninja assassins) trying to save the universe from future robots (ripped off from Mass Effect).

    I hope they do go more episodic and more Trek like. The Orville is very popular because of those two aspects (and you can still have a series arc, just like the Orville, and self contained stories).

    To be Trek it needs to be an optimistic view of the future, show team work resolving problems that they face, favour science over of handy wavy magic characters.

    They have two things right so far, the casting of the main three is very, very good. Anson Mount is the right age and very believable as a captain. All three are very good actors.

    Final on is the special effects, all the shows have had their movie level moments. It should look great.

    Now tell though provoking stories, they can even be political (TOS was). They just need to be smart. Get working sci fi authors to write an episode.

    very late to the party but reading through the thread has been really interesting,

    dont think i'll be participating too much though because i really liked both Discovery and Picard, sure Picard had some slow episodes, the main thread could have been told in half the time but i still found them both very watchable

    i think i just didn't analyse them that much, just tried to sit back an enjoy, most reviews ive seen are around the 7/10 mark which i thinks about right, we're not talking Madalorian levels of good here but still fun

    also love the Orville...find i get taken out of the story sometimes because of the TNG sets/uniforms /lighting etc though, i realise thats kind of the point but after a couple of season it kind of stand out
