Is Henry Honiball the Frans Botha of Rugby or is Frans Botha the Henry Honiball of boxing ?

Pinot noir is grossly overrated. It's bland, and the ones that are starting to taste good aren't nearly as good as a nice Cab Sav at half the price.

    Shiraz is better still.

Also, it's the drink I get given by suppliers and clients every year, and so my dad (who hoovers the stuff up) does well out of it.

I'm kinda with you. cheap Pinot is fucking ordinary. A decent bottle can be nice though

If you have $20-$25 to spend on a bottle of wine, in that bracket a shiraz or Cab Sav is going to be miles superior to a Pinot

Yeah really good pinots have to be upwards of 30 bucks which I object to unless I'm visiting a vineyard and the people there are good sorts.

So true. Pinot is a fluffybunny of a grape to grow, and low yield (generally) so a good one is going to cost.

Central Otago pinot noir is really nice but expensive.

White wine is only good for cooking.

Every time I go to the rapa I prepare myself to spend a fair amount but anything too much is alot for something that you get four glasses out of ( or two if you're with the other half )

Not possessing the sophisticated palette of others, I prefer a cheeky Merlot to a Pinot, which is a woman's grape.

I try not to go over $25......and you are right, some are bordering on diabolical. Brewers get too clever for their own good.

    that's a good one

the vast majority of these small batch, small brewery beers are fucking ordinary, and they are taking the absolute piss charging $25 for 6 decidedly average beers

It's extremely rare to get six genuinely good beers in a pick six which seem all the rage these days.

I really like Central Pinot. But I reckon Waipara Pinot is the best in NZ

    FIFY.

I think you guys are just a bit fucked by being in NZ (or Oz) where everything is outrageously expensive.

However, my confession is that, when I'm at home with the oldies, I quite like the Montana South Island Pinot (winemaker series). At all of $10 a bottle, you can treat it a bit like a Beaujolais, take a few degrees of it in the fridge for 30 minutes then have a glass in the evening sun....

By the way, if you can get your hands on Etna Rosso, do it.

@canefan I bought 2 different vintages of Sam Neill's Two Paddocks Pinot Noir a few years back. Not something I would buy regularly at that price but worth it.

I drink more Italian reds when the wider family gets together.

Thats good stuff. I'm central otago all the way for pinot, just has more body.

For cheaper buys, i agree Italian is the goods, a heap inoffensive chianti can be had for $20.

I love the Aussie reds, but find the Barossa stuff too heavy these days. Anything over 14% and I'm tasting syrup. Give me a McLaren Vale blend any day

Wirra Wirra McLaren Vale shiraz is a ripper, especially when you get it on sale for $18

Booze in this country is fucking expensive though. The government is addicted to the taxation
