Not saying I don't trust you, but those blind links to the herald where you could wind up in a Rattue article remind me of the earlier days of the internet where people got sent to a goat-related website.

Sorry what was just "handed" to Jesse Ryder? I don't know what you mean by that.

Fuck, Jesse Ryder is an "all rounder" as well now apparently. Never realised we had a team of 10 Gary Sobers and Imran Khans and a keeper/batsman.

A bit rough Hooroo, Ryder got in by virtue of runs which weren't "handed" to him, that's for sure.

I sorta get your point in a roundabout way Hooroo. I always thought he was a guy that when on song made it look much easier than Ross Taylor ( who lets be honest can look fucken ugly at times especially when that slog sweep goes wrong ) JR looks like a guy who coulda cruised and averaged early 40s ( like Mark Waugh or David Gower ) or knuckle down and possibly been our best ever. Some batsmen just have "that" touch.....Tendulkar, Lara......

A rugby equivalent might be Ma'a Nonu who early on was adept at tucking the ball and trampling anyone under foot, that can only get you so far. He could have gone down as a pretty good AB but to his immense credit he learnt to pass, kick, read the game etc and most impressively to me at least run up some of Wellys particularly nasty hills to build the lungs, awesome dedication for a power athlete. That's why he's possibly the best 12 who ever played for the Men in Black.

I'll just leave this here. I really enjoy Kimber's writing, and he is a big Jesse fan. So am I, but I'm not sure that test cricket is his place.

Don't get me wrong, when he bats, especially in test cricket, it is a thing of beauty. I love watching him bat, like I loved watching the Waugh brothers bat.

Yep and that's precisely what makes it so frustrating. Williamson/Taylor/Ryder one after the other would be as good as anything going about in test cricket now and far and away better than anything in Black Caps history.

I think theres a wee bit of over hype over Ryder. If you look at what he did in tests, he scored a few huge knocks against India & the Bangles. Played Aussie 4 times & was shithouse.

Averaged 41 from his first 18 tests. Matt Sinclair averaged 43 from his first 18. And the Fern regard him as a total failure. And his big knocks were against SA & Pak, not fucking India in Napier.....Lou Vincent after 18 tests? 47 average. one of his tons was v Aussie in Perth

And most of all, his last few seasons he's been reeeeally average in Essex. The idea we should be jerking ourselves senseless at the thought we might get back an overweight, out of form, 31 year old to solve all our issues - as opposed to say giving Nichols a chance to settle in, or move Watling down & hand the gloves to a young guy, only works if you are a "bit" delusional over what Jesse did in his 18 tests & haven't seen him bat in the last 3 years.

As a T20 player fuck year. He would REALLY add something, but tests? Fat, less good, Matt Sinclair come on down...

You know Gollum ... as much as I hate your pompous, self-important, over the top posts ...
... I kind of find I end up agreeing with you ...

There was a huge public clamour for Ryder a couple of months before RWC - and the BCs seemed to go alright without him. His batting does seem to have regressed in recent years - he did look like he could be a really good test player when he first came into the team but nothing in his recent past indicates he has the single-minded commitment to become a test batsman again.
