There have been rumours that Matson's job was on the block. He is the main assistant coach so his salary is paid by NZR.

The Chiefs' defence wasn't good enough and too passive.

I wonder if any team is keen to pick up a whole coaching group of failed ex-Cantabs

      Mauger
      Hammerteur
      Matson

It is an interesting sideshow to the coaching employment picture where having anything to do with Canterbury or Crusaders on CVs seems to provide opportunities above abilities though.

Should I be worried that Matson is leaving just as Hammer is looking for another job?

Nah. The Chiefs will look within the franchise area if they want new assistants. McMillan is there in 2021 and likely for the longterm. Barnes could also get the axe from the current coaching group.

If you are talking Chiefs then I am terrified! I’ve already shifted allegiance once in part to that guy. I have nowhere left to go

Barnes has looked to be the weakest link all along from the outside

David Hill has to be questioned to? He moved incredibly quickly through the ranks, straight from player to BOP and NZ U20 assistant and never had much success in any of those roles either. Clayton may look at Marty Bourke or Mike Rogers who came on as BOP assistants last year & the team improved markedly winning the comp, both come through club level then won Jock Hobbs as co-coaches.

@trooa Hill is only the kicking coach, the same role I think he fills for the ABs. You could make an argument that the Chiefs general play kicking wasn't up to standard.

The assistant coach roles to fill could be defence and forwards. Kind of important.

They should all have to reapply.

Hill, in particular, sounds as dumb as a post on TV (I've heard through friends that he is a really nice guy).

@Bovidae Purely just kicking, I thought he was in charge of all skills? Either way, you don't look at the teams he's been involved in & see the noticeable difference he has made. Mike Rogers will definitely be a shot then if that's the roles they're after, he takes forwards/scrum & McMillan takes defence at BOP whereas Bourke is backs/attack.

NZRU/Chiefs have to take some responsibility around the overall coaching fit & contract lengths when they knew Cooper was going to finish up. Generally when you're a coach at any level, you have some sort of say on who your assistants are so that you ensure you can work well together and have similar philosophies e.g. Razor had Jase Ryan come up through the ranks with him then they hand picked O'Gara once Macdonald left. This Chiefs situation looks like Gatland had no say in who his assistants were, the year off just makes that even more of a shitshow as do you choose someone Clayton works well with or Gatland for the next 2years?

It could be kicking and skills.

Nick White is the scrum coach and Roger Randle the attack coach.

The current assistants were all appointed under Colin Cooper's tenure.

McMillan was involved with Chiefs' trainings this season so he will have an idea of what is needed within the coaching group for 2021.

@Bovidae considering the attack, all season, looked like they met in the carpark before the game

and our defensive structure was club standard

and our basic skills were shithouse

they should all get the chop

They did ok before the lockdown when they were playing on Cooper muscle memory.

The final selection has been confirmed for the New Zealand Barbarians Under 18 Chiefs Region Camp. The camp is set to take place from Monday 28 September to Thursday 1 October at St Paul's Collegiate in Hamilton. 50 talented players have been selected from across the Chiefs region to attend the four-day camp.

The camp includes the selection of nine girls within the fifty selected players, who will partake in the mixed training sessions.

Chiefs Rugby Club Player Development Manager Kent Currie said the New Zealand Barbarians Chiefs Under 18 Region Camp will provide a great platform for these players to experience the Chiefs Rugby Club’s high-performance pathway.

“In these uncertain times, New Zealand Rugby have done a fantastic job, sourcing the funds that will enable us to provide a wonderful development opportunity for our most talented young male and female rugby players from within the Chiefs region. Again, the camp will give us an opportunity to connect our up and coming talent with some of our past Chiefs players, who will share their knowledge by contributing to the various coaching roles at this camp.”

The players attending will be coached by several leading coaches from within the Chiefs region.
