I absolutely loved this year's race, mainly because it was during term break so i could watch a lot of stages. However, those guys were really going... which makes one wonder....

And, further down the filed, this:

@Chris-B amazing. Did you see the look on Dumoulin and Van Aert’s faces as they watched that unfold?

All I saw was utter disbelief that Pogačar could ride the course that fast. I'd be interested in seeing the wattage graphed.

@antipodean Dumoulin said that his numbers on Saturday were the same as when he won the world TT champs. A one day race. Pogacar pushed out 5% more power to get that far ahead and that was at the end of a 3 week tour ... Just as well a couple of the UAE bosses aren’t historically touched by doping. Evidently.

It’s a shame that people are thinking this way as on the face of it Pogacar did something truly amazing. Perhaps the exuberance of youth. He rode the last climb to ‘feel’, with no power data or time checks.

          I really want to believe.

But, at the back of my mind I remember buying a yellow wristband too.

Patty Bevin hoping for a podium finish.

You'd think the guys who didn't ride the Tour and have been preparing specifically for this would have a significant advantage over those who did.

yeh i'd say so. will be a good race, Ganna's to lose.. flat course.. never count out Dennis tho.

I'm mainly interested to see how Finn Fisher-Black goes - he's the real deal... top 10 would be awesome.

Patty finishes 12th and 50 seconds off the podium.

When you look at the names ahead of him it is a tough gig!

Rohan Dennis only 5th and Dumoulin (nearly crashed) but 10th on the day.

I see Paddy picked up 5 spots after the intermediate timing. Not sure if he finished strong or others went out too hot but either way that’s a good thing.

@Crucial Yeah - that link I posted also gives the intermediate split times at the bottom.

Bevin rode the second "half" 3 seconds faster than Ganna - just waay too slow in the first half. Van Aert, Kung and Asgreen all significantly faster than Ganna on the second half.

On the other side, Rohan Dennis was 2nd at the intermediate split - but, lost 20 seconds to Ganna in both sets of splits and three places over the 2nd leg. Probably went too hard early.

                      Good result for the women.

Nianh Fisher-Black (15th) and Mikayla Harvey (22nd) finish in the lead bunch - a bit behind most of the big guns.

                      The Dutch kill it!

Love the front on slow mo of his team mate in the background! Not that I know much about cycling but I assume it was his team mates that got him there. All that hard work and that tosser throws the win away.

I may have that all wrong but that is what it appears to be to me.

Ánother big "Wow" day in the Giro on Stage 3.

Geraint Thomas crashed at the start (I gather still in the neutral zone) and presumably injured enough that he got dropped even before the start of the climb up Mt. Etna. He lost more than 12 minutes on the Stage winner and barring something extraordinary is surely out of GC contention.

Almost as sensationally, Simon Yates blew up on the climb and is 3 minutes or so down on the other main GC contenders.

If you want to see riding that isn't the big GC boys being dragged up the hill by their teams then this was it (and it's great!).

In my view, Fuglsang looked the strongest of those I'd expect to fight things out, although Kelderman jumped away from the others and gained 10 seconds.

Might be a battle of the old men - Fuglsang, Nibali, Kruiswijk, Pozzovivo, Majka all contending - along with Kelderman, maybe Bilbao (but surely having ridden the TdF he will fade).

Things aren't irretrievable for Yates, but a pretty ominous fade.

If this video works it shows Thomas' crash.

Someone has made a bloody good shot with a red bidon - missed a lot of lesser lights and taken down the favourite!

crashes like that are the worst - if you're flying you slide and don't tend to get too much damage other than skin.. when you're a bit slower and land with your weight that's what farks you

@Chris-B yesterday’s events have already turned the Giro into a yawn fest for me. I’ve now got 10 days or so of waiting to watch arguably the two in form superstars (Van Aert and Van der Poel) smash each other at the Tour of Flanders and then a week later, Paris Roubaix (my favourite race of the year).
