Loving the "Fuck Covid but by Christ we'll make the best of what we can" attitude in here. It's obviously pretty shit, but I hope Christmas is enjoyable despite Covid's worst efforts.

    What can you do?

To be honest, on all the WhatsApp chats I’m on most ppl are being very British. Keep Calm and Carry On.

Yeah ppl are annoyed, but the UK has always done Xmas right. Indulge, enjoy, deal with the fallout later.

@RoninWC Bin 28 being Shiraz? If so, I think I’ve tried it but only relatively young. Sadly we don’t seem to get much of the good SH stuff up here.

Yes, a Shiraz from Barossa in SA.

    Like life in the UK!

    @MajorRage @Victor-Meldrew

Not sure if you have seen but on the most recent just dropped episode of The Grand Tour, Captain Slow James May is driving a Caterham around Reunion Island.

After watching the episode, I now have a much greater appreciation for that car, hats off @MajorRage

    Yep. Keeps forever.

I'm starting to move away from Bordeaux and taking a punt on decent Oz reds. Stick ing with Rioja & Chateau Musar as dependable, reliable reds.

Oz reds can be great, but I really struggle with the last few years of Shiraz, particularly from the Barossa. The warmer temperatures have meant they really struggle to keep the alcohol down, and its really hard to find one with less than 14.5%, often a full 1% higher.

I prefer McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Clare Valley more now.

Wirra Wirra McLaren Vale is a ripper especially at the price.

    Is that this one?

Its a bit hard to get Oz wines, but ill look out for it.

Here at the gt12 household, we are gearing up for our first ‘kid knows what Xmas is’ Xmas, so its kind of cool, because I’ve been kind of over Xmas itself and only really focused on opening a few nice bottles (which will, of course continue). My boy is into it though, so we’ve put up a tree and will be doing our first Xmas eve wrap presents / put them under the tree for him. We’re thinking to have a ‘stocking’ from Santa and big gifts from us - we’re not sure whether having ‘big’ gifts from Santa is the way to go [advice?]

Because we cant go home, we are trying to carry on some traditions and start some new ones. We have one friend in our bubble coming over on Xmas, so at least it won’t just be my wife and I wrangling the boy. Given the situation of the guys in the UK, that feels like a luxury - I was pissed that I’m not in NZ, but now I’m just glad that we can have a friend over. 2020 ay?

We are planning to have a bottle of something fortified (I’m thinking Marsala this year as I was given a nice-ish bottle) while we do the presents under the tree on Christmas Eve to start a new tradition.

We’re shipping our boy off to pre-school in the morning of Xmas as they are having a party with a Santa visit (its a regular work day here so pre-school is running), so we’ll have a Champagne brekkie (I have a couple of bottles of a nice-ish non dosage) with Lamb chops, bacon, and eggs. That’s a tradition we are continuing from my family - breakfast is usually our most important Xmas tradition (my old mans I usually knock over the lamb in the week before Xmas - so ordering it online certainly made that easy this year).

We’ll then get the boy and do Xmas lunch (Ham, foie gras). I think we’ll start with a pineau des charentes (with the foie gras) then an Etna Bianca and Etna Rosso with the ham and cheese (thank you fromages_dot_com - highly recommend btw)

In the evening once the boy goes down, assuming we can still eat, we’ll be having cassoulet with a CDP and possibly also a bottle of Coleraine or a Pavillon Rouge. As long as we live here, I think that the Xmas Cassoulet could become a new tradition (Im cheating btw, I ordered it from an amazing French place in town). That place starting take-away cassoulet might be one of the best thing to come out of this shitty year.

As far as having a bunch of random Polish birds for internet chat goes, you guys are pretty good, so I hope that everyone can stay safe, at least, and with luck next year will be a bit better. Merry Xmas all.

@gt12 even just this for a midweek quaffer

    https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_11021/wirra-wirra-church-block-cabernet-sauvignon-shiraz-merlot

Its great when you find a wine you really like that doesn't cost the earth. Sometimes they just work for you. For me, I reckon this is well underpriced at $23:

Oh, also, Xmas is back on - now hosting the in-laws and the sister-in laws fam, so will have 6 adults and 5 kids for the day. Great to have cousins and grandparents for the kids, and the wife is happy.

New rules mean I can't leave the beaches for 3 days but we can have 10 adults and as many feral under-12s as we wish. I plan to spend 3 days at home entertaining, eating and drinking and cooking and swimming, before the 27th rolls around and we cant see anyone again for the foreseeable

BTW it is an immutable law of nature that no matter where you apply sun screen prior to a holiday activity in the sun, the bit you miss will be the the most sensitive bit and be the bit that is most exposed to the sun.

As an example, say you hypothetically go on a jet ski tour, hypothetically wear shorts which cover your upper thigh, so that area does not need sun screen, but of course the shorts hypothetically ride up while sitting on the jet ski ... that would be quite sore ... hypothetically ...

    Further update...

... need to work on Mr Boo Jr's Geography. We've been talking about going out to "The Reef" when we're up at Cairns. Wasn't until she saw a sign announcing The Great Barrier Reef Drive that the penny dropped. D'oh. (She's good at English though.)

Hopefully the Palestinian and Jordanian don't both just bring hummus and bread

Hopefully the Palestinian and Jordanian aren't both thinking "hope the Kiwi doesn't do Pavlova - it's just meringue and whipped cream FFS. Yeah and isn't it dinki di Aussie anyway?"

Yep! You need to do a rolled shoulder of Christmas lamb, @Nepia!!

We're already doing a roast chicken as the "main" - plus I live in inner city Sydney, like I can afford lamb after paying my accomodation costs. 😉

I've got 2.5kgs of rolled pork loin going cheap...comes infused with the Northern Beaches Rona

Hahaha, I'll head over grab it, get tested, go into iso and sit at home for Xmas playing PS4 but well stuffed with pork.

Just checked it on the ferry for you bro, and I threw in one of these that I spotted at my local Coles today - you're set!

    _IMG_000000_000000.jpg

    Sorted. 🙂

So made my pav last night - spectacular failure. I last made one when I was 13. I knew I shouldn't have followed in online recipe that called it The Great Aussie Pav.

I'm going to give it another shot tonight, but I'm going to grab a Harris Farm/Coles one as a just in case back up.

Should have said I'd bring boil up.

I'm not a trifle fan, and obviously this dessert is for me - have ingredients to make peach pudding/caramel royal pudding so will make those if I balls up tonight's pav. Had a read online and think I know the issues.
