I vaguely remember Lance Cairns playing, but no clear memory of his bowling. I gather he was another 80's bowler who could get the ball to talk on occasions.

Strictly medium pace but that unusual action of his used to allow him to get some very late inswing. As a kid I would try to copy him in back yard cricket with a taped up tennis ball.

Must have been all kids of that age who grew up in the 80s

It's amazing how much swing you could get with a fully taped tennis ball. Better yet to only tape half of the ball.

I had Malcolm Marshall's bowling action mastered.

@ACT-Crusader In the West Indies, Hadlee bounced Joel Garner 5 times in an over. He didn't use the bouncer much, but he could do it. Danny Morrison also didn't bounce people that much but could.

Edit: Bond was obviously also pretty quick, but agree that our current crop would be the most consistently fast we've put out.

Bond was consistently in the 150s. Outstanding bowler... and really accurate too. Bowled one side of the wicket. Despite Tim's recent form, I'd take Shane in a heartbeat

@Bovidae it’s insane , about 20 years ago I use to holiday at my brother in laws place which was a farm , the previous owners had a grass tennis court with the high fences , so my brother in law made sure there was a cricket strip all set up for the holidays ..it was such a road to bat on especially with a tennis ball , we decided to tape the ball up with some insulation tape ..boy did that puppy swing , it gave the poor bowler something to get his teeth into , all of a sudden we had a slip and gully ..😂..
Certainly made for fun, except facing the brother in law who was left armer with a sling shot action .., you actually need a box as I found out 😂

When did the umpire stop holding the bowler's hat, jumper and glasses? Only noticed it this season.

50 up for Kane, Captain Fantastic does it again.

                  This year due to Covid.

@Godder cheers. I was worried someone was going to say they haven't held them since the 80's!

About now Pakistan are very happy with their first innings score, especially having been 83/4 at one stage.

Supposedly, although it's disputed whether he actually said it.

Apparently in stuff I stole from Reddit my lengthy research about 2021 and cricket, the only player with exactly 2021 test runs is Mark Greatbatch.

I vaguely remember Lance Cairns playing, but no clear memory of his bowling. I gather he was another 80's bowler who could get the ball to talk on occasions.

Sub 120kph but huge in swing (especially with the white ball at night).

I vaguely remember Lance Cairns playing, but no clear memory of his bowling. I gather he was another 80's bowler who could get the ball to talk on occasions.

About now Pakistan are very happy with their first innings score, especially having been 83/4 at one stage.

Sub 120kph but huge in swing (especially with the white ball at night).

In terms of a NZ cricket player ( or any cricket player for that matter ) whose aura exceeds his returns I can’t think of anyone who comes close to Lance Cairns.

You'd look at him nowadays and wonder how he managed to make to First Class level as a bowler.

For those who can't remember Lance think a burlier version of Chris Harris, strangely similar action, about the same pace, similar in swing.

But even in the Young Gun days you wouldn't have picked Harris as a specialist bowler. He was primarily a batsman.

Lance could take wickets though. Took a couple of 7fers, including bowling us to victory in England for the first time.

And whilst typing that Kane roars into the 90s (including scraping one over slips ... but we'll ignore that due to the magnificence of the on drives).
