So just in case anyone hear was thinking about watching The Lady in The Van (unlikely but you never know - no tits, gore, violence or scatological humour)

Its had some rave reviews and is doing good box office but I found it self indulgent, way too long and just pointless.

Couple of grins at the re-creation of Camden in the 70/80's but that was it for me.

Inception

Another Netflix catch up here, as I'd never seen it at the movies.

Great idea, well executed. Had no trouble tracking each of the layers and thought the concept of dream within dream was very interesting.

Some of the characters were a little stilted. I found DiCaprio's character lacking a level of depth I'd expect for a desperate father, in the scenes involving his children. Maybe that was his character's defence mechanism. But I thought that performance was still better than Revenant.

Ellen Page is always good to watch. Think she tends to get characters right most of the time, but for a Uni student she was hella perceptive.

Tom Hardy was good, if a little stereotyped, as the sarcastic Englishman. Joseph Gordon-Levitt didn't get a lot to work with, and his long-term relationship as a partner with Dom didn't really present well in the film. Its like they knew each other well, but didn't give a shit.

I give it 4 Crazy Dead French Bitches out of 5.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Better than Man of Steel.

Ok movie but not that good. Batfleck and Gal Gadot are probably the best things in it (and TBH I have no idea what Gadot's acting is like) but the plotting just seems all over the place.

I think that the amount of talent involved might contribute to this, with Snyder and Nolan as producer = too many cooks. It has the poo faced seriousness of Nolan's films although at times Batfleck appears to have his tongue in cheek and he has the semi funny lines. Fishburne gets a few funny lines as Perry White as well.

Saw the trailers (despite doing my usual don't go in until 20 minutes after start time to avoid them) for Civil War and Suicide Squad and they both look like they're going to be good.

When I was back home in NZ a week back they were saying how it was the number 1 movie in the country 3 weeks in a row - I'm surprised the union jack won with all the oldies apparently queuing back up to watch this movie over and over again.

Try watching Bad Boy Bubby in your early 20s with your Mum and your girlfriend when it was your Mum's choice (recommended by a friend of hers). That is fucking uncomfortable.

TBF, a double bill with Spanking the Monkey would be worse.

I assumed being in a film as awful as spanking the monkey would have ruined the main actors career but he's managed to be in some good stuff over the years.

A mate of mine had a band and the initiation for new members was to sit through bad boy bubby with the other guys in the band , uncomfortable questions were asked of the new guy throughout the film .

Haven't seen it, but by the sounds of the scathing reviews, could have done with a giant edit - get rid of the dream sequences and flashbacks for starters.

Like with Man of Steel, for some reason Snyder doesn't seem to get that you can only have so much CGI action before people get bored shitless. You've got to be moved by the characters - love, hate, fear, pissing yourself laughing, whatever, and with a fragmented story or little character development, you aren't.

JJ Abrams understood that with The Force Awakens, epic action special effects movie with even more history riding on it, but he nailed it cos he got viewers invested in Han and Leia and the newbies Rey and Finn etc.

One of the dream sequences was what convinced me to go see it - a Batman fight - and I was gutted it was a dream.

I don't think Snyder is a good director TBH. 300 was good, and I know that The Watchmen has it's fanbois around here, but that, Sucker Punch, Man of Steel, and this mark him as average. I'm gutted he's directing the Justice League movies and glad he's not directing Suicide Squad.

I thought Watchmen and Sucker Punch were good. In fact, the latter was on last night here and I enjoyed catching a few minutes - though that may have just been Emily Browning's thighs talking

I think film critics are, generally, fuck heads. Like food critics, no-one wants to hear them just agree with the director's vision: more clicks in controversy.

I'll go see Batsy v Supes as soon as the opportunity presents itself. No expectations.

Yeah, Sucker Punch doesn't sound terrible at all. Must be those stupid film critics who are wrong.

Its personal taste. You can talk about technical merit and whatnot, but how much someone enjoys a film is purely down to them.

I certainly don't avoid a film because the critics said to. Fucking Revenant failed to deliver in any way.

Just watched the Trailer for The Sausage Party (same group of dudes who did Superbad, This is the End etc).

At first I was like what the fuck is this...then a potato got peeled. Hope it's not one of those movies where all the funny bits are in the trailer.

Zootopia. Looked great. Kids loved it. But it would be lovely if they could make these KIDS films for, you know, kids and give it a rest with the sanctimonious, preachy bullshit.

I'm not convinced it was a dream. DC are pushing their multiverse thing pretty hard, I think this is a version of the future where Superman has lost his connection to humanity (cause Lois and probably his Mum are dead) and/or he's being manipulated by Darkseid (those are his parademons you saw in that sequence, as well as the giant Omega symbol on the ground).

Ties in with the other Flash vision warning him about Lois.

There is just so much content in this film it's going to take multiple views to get all the Easter eggs. I'm looking forwards to the 30min longer R rated edit on blue ray too. Rumour is we see what happens to Robin and Batgirl, which explains why we have this crazy brutal version of the Batman.

I got what I wanted from this film, a live action comic book - for better or worse. Fuck the critics, it was fun.

I would have preferred Bryan Cranston as Lex though.
