New Zealand Rugby has received a $465 million offer from US technology investment giants Silver Lake for a 15 per cent share of commercial rights valued at $3.1 billion, the Herald can reveal.

The deal, should it be signed off by New Zealand Rugby's provincial unions in the coming months, would be the biggest seachange since the game turned professional 25 years ago, and the largest transaction of this nature in NZ sports history.

New Zealand Rugby and Silver Lake have been in talks for over nine months, with the Herald first revealing their shared interests last May.

While Silver Lake's minority stake remains under negotiation and could be anywhere from 10 to 15 per cent, with terms yet to be finalised, the Herald understands they have tabled a $465 million offer for 15 per cent of a new, separate NZ Rugby entity.

      @Tim there is this

NZ Rugby executives suggest Silver Lake do not adopt a smash-and-grab mentality but, rather, intend to form a decade-long partnership, though acknowledge risks are involved when the firm wants to exit in time.

@Tim IIRC the first Adidas contract in 99 was a 10 year deal, but they ended up coming back to NZR well before to re-negotiate an extension.

Wonder what they get from the deal (aside form the 10-15% of what? I mean they dont seem the type of company to have it's name on the jersey or anything like that?

I ha the impression that selling the jersey sponsorship would be something they would have control over and get a % of that...that knd pf ting...but I might be making that up

@KiwiMurph well I fern'd it, read what was posted only, this is the way.

Funny I was reading an article over the weekend where they were saying they needed to get EA Sports back into doing rugby games, in particularly looking at the technical stuff (including graphics) you have with NFL, some could easily be replicated to rugby.

10-15% of all marketing revenue - so all sponsorships, merchandising, TV rights, games, streaming etc.

would seem a win-win for NZR?

Silverlake invest millions and millions based on a magical made up figure of potential rugby fans, want a return from revenue streams, that unless the appearance of all these fans happens, 15% income from revenue likely to be less than investment??

Possibly, but there are a lot of casual fans. People like Jason Momoa and the Rock wearing All Black jerseys, just as an example of celebrity fans.

They don’t mean nut jobs like us that follow everything in tortuous detail.

@Kirwan yeah fair enough, its just hard to believe that there are that many that they think they can get enough money out of to be worth worrying about, "casual fan" and "casual fan that would spend any money" seem like different things

Silver Lake are involved with the UFC so must have some idea of how to build a global brand.

And for all of you that didn't read the article, this little fact.

Stuff has been told that the average age of a fan who attends a Super Rugby game is about 44 years old, a figure that spells trouble for the game if the underlying reasons are ignored.

So NZR needs to generate interest from the younger generation to survive.

firstly, that's retarded. 1 in every 7 is a Man U fan? yeah right

That said, the big premier league clubs and the two big spanish ones have massive global reach. But that's soccer. Loved by people everywhere. 1.1 billion is ridiculous though for one club.

@mariner4life guess they must have the metrics to measure it, and I assume thier definition of 'fan' is probably different to what we see ourselves when we support the ABs , Super team or M10 cup team?
