@canefan and contrary to what @crucial (correctly) wrote, Sid Sarawat is very hands on in the kitchen. I mean I haven't seen him peeling the spuds but definitely getting a sweat up over the hot plate at Sidart.

We're lucky in NZ that there are still opportunities to see our 'top' chefs preparing and cooking food and have a chat to them.

Yup, I have seen him more than once standing on the pass at Sidart. In contrast, I don't think I've ever seen Simon Gault Ben Bayley or Josh Emmett with a utensil in their hands...

A few that fly under the radar

Phil's Kitchen, Kingsland. Odd position, odd decore, excellent food from a Michelin trained chef

Paris Butter, Herne Bay. Used to be Vinnies, the food is very good, with innovative but not overwrought preparations

Lillius, Symonds St AK central. Relaxed quiet dining room with delicious food

    Cocoro, Ponsonby. Exquisite Japanese food

My favourite restaurant in AK would probably be Azabu in Ponsonby. Nikkei cuisine (Japanese Peruvian) is a match made in heaven

Have had Simon Gault make me some of his molecular gastronomy creations at my table and explain them to me then serve me himself.

Ben Bayly - serving out pork and puha sliders from a hangi he lay down at Taste Auckland

Josh Emmett acting as sous chef for a visiting chef from Melbourne (can't remember who)

they almost all do it at special events - not so much in their day to day roles as Executive Chefs. Had similar experiences with Sean Connolly, Peter Gordon and Al Brown amongst the celebrity chefs.

Since I moved back from the UK I really miss a real curry house. We've got a couple of Indian restaurants where I live but they are too upmarket TBH. I want something like Tayyab's. Or even a balti from one of the cheap and cheerful curry houses that you get practically anywhere, with their hilarious decor, dodgy spelling in their menus, ingredients that it's best not to think about, and huge flavour. And samosas that don't look like they've been chiseled out of concrete please.

@jc Purple flock wallpaper, Air India posters of the Taj Mahal and cheap gilt statues of Ganesha cold Kingfisher - fantastic memories.

    Where are you now?

@canefan cheers matey, good stuff. You're a dentist clearly - expensive tastes!

since this is recommendations, I'll go cheap and cheerful with Peach's

    Peach's Hot Chicken

    Peach's Hot Chicken

We are a restaurant in Panmure serving up authentic Nashville Hot Chicken.

In panmure at the moment, but opening up other stores at some stage. Destination restaurant - it's remarkable and I havne't had anything like it elsewhere. Awesome.

@jc That's what I thought. Indigo's not bad although I haven't been since its makeover. Rasoi's about as far away from yr UK examples as you can get but it does do some decent food.

I'm lucky enough to have a couple of decent of school Indian restaurants in my neighbourhood. Occasionally the food disappoints but its usually reliable, the beers always cold and the décor is chintzy as fuck.

@dogmeat Yeah we do Rasoi every couple of weeks. No complaints, but it's nice Indian food, not an old school "curry house".

I do it a few times, when I have time to recover. About 3 days. It's fun 🙂

Try it. Brioche bun just ... works

Welfare BBQ in Highland Park has probably the best cantonese BBQ duck I've eaten from a BBQ shop in AK. The crispy pork and soya chicken is great too. Two meat combo with rice for about $12

Maruten Ramen, Mt Roskill. It's where the expat Japs go!! My favourite is the Tsukymen with cold thick noodles

Try It Out Vietnamese. The mother ship is in Otahuhu, they have a branch in Pakuranga, great pho

Empress Garden, Herne Bay. Terrible service, the other food is average. But the Peking duck is nek level, dollar for dollar probably the best in town

Coco's Cantina. K Road. Nice casual contemporary Italian fare

Fuck is that Empress Garden on the corner if Herne Bay Rd and Jervois?
I lived just around the corner 35 years ago and used to get takeaways there. I’d say it had been there a long time before that too.

If the service is good, it's not authentic. Nothing better than the grumpy ladies pushing the trolleys at yum cha!
