I saw on the news that quadraplegic guy who got a chip in his brain... and be was moving his arm/hand around and doing stuff like swiping EFTPOS card... fucking amazing.

Why the hell didnt that lead the news???

Here is a version of the article.

I saw that too, it was amazing. It's weird to think that's just the beginning and in a few years that's going to appear primitive compared to what we have then .

Some of the prosthetics for limb replacement are already amazing. Decrease in battery and component size will also assist with better longevity and integration.

A wise cracking spook called Tee Hee bent Secret Agent James Bonds Walter PPK in half with a prosthetic claw during a documentary I saw that was made in the 70s called "Live and Let Die" so I'd expect advances to be pretty advanced today......

Basically I'd expect the future to be as futuristic as they thought it was going to be.

Pretty much led the news in the UK, well, behind MP dates a hooker, great thing was once they get it working they can switch to wifi.

So you have a snapped spine? No biggie chip in your brain will send the signal to your limb chip via wifi. I guess the next step after that is the just stick a chip in your spine below the break.

Or better yet just regrow your spine using stem cells.

My Brother was knocked of his push bike at 16 years of age and an unsuccessful surgery made him a paraplegic. I always wonder what he thinks about this sort of thing. He has a successful life with two kids and a good job, but I wonder if he has hope for this sort of thing? I wonder what the limit of time is for it to be able to help (He is 50 now)

First the scientific community needs to work out what "consciousness" actually is.

It's the biggest question facing modern science according to many.

If you want reliable technology then you have to invest. You can build systems that are up 100% of the time if you're willing to invest big bucks, which no people/businesses are.

We just need to cripple some rich folks, Parkinsons moved on hugely once Michael J Fox got it. Christopher Reeve probably did more for stem cells than most scientists. Lets get together & paralyse Ronaldo. For science obv.

    Haha yes just a bit.

I can't face being an old person who is out of touch with new tech. Simple solution- freeze things where we are now and we're laughing.

Except maybe if you're paraplegic.

I wonder if this would have an effect on people suffering from MS? Being able to bypass the nervous system all together?

Maybe if we go back four or five ... or ten years I'd have a hope of keeping up

Might help some but MS isn't just a case of by-passing one circuit break its potentially replacing the whole system and that sounds like a massive step onward from this.

GE is more likely to offer hope.

Yeah MS and MND (ALS) and all that nerve-level shit would require a full body shell, and doesn't address the eventual cause of death: failure of organs in MND patients and loss of mobility or mental impairment in MS.

Ideally, pre-natal screening and treatment would head a lot of that off.
