With Papali'i not fit, Savea is the best option at openside.

I don't think many on this site would disagree. Question is though, where should Papali'i rank if all 7s are fit?

And what could be the ranks when Cane is back ?

Yeah I have Papalii as the best openside, if Cane came back I could abide him at 6, but then we'd have to have a big bopper at 8, with I guess Savea to the bench. Tough for Jacobson.

I just think Paps has to be there in the form he's in.

@bones yep. Cane is getting old, too many injuries and lost support for his whining last year. Papalli should be out new 7. Please excuse the spelling.

@nostrildamus As kids we used to stop for an ice cream at Pokeno regularly. Much more fun when you had to cross SH1 to get from the car to the shop. Now it's just a quiet main street.

Yes, but bacon. Everything is better with bacon and they make it there. So...

          When is Pap due back?

@snowy Pokeno Bacon in Mercer is a must-stop if I need a feed on my way to/from Auckland. There is the butchery shop in Pokeno too.

Yep, we stop for the cheese shop in Mercer, the butcher in Pokeno. Huntly was a toilet stop. Apologies to those from Huntly. Haven't been South for a while but I think that the by pass has been done? So that will be a ghost town too.

@broughie As for Pap replacing Cane? That seems unlikely (for now). Although I wouldn't mind too much either. Have them both in the squad but the captain is going to be there.

The Huntly off ramp is done. But the giant Sleepyhead factory they are building on the outskirts of the town will see it prosper shortly

@snowy Probably right because he is captain and it is hard to displace someone that has established themselves as an AB for a while. Some might think that Retallick is on the wane also but Fozzies the coach.

Looking at the All Blacks' instagram, several injured player are with the squad, including Joe Moody, Ofa Tu'ungafasi and Sam Cane.

If Nepo Laulala goes down then our front row will be looking very green. Hope to see Moody and Ofa T back soon!

Maybe it's a good thing as the previous plan, of having the wing picked a year out from the RWC didn't work out that well.

@chris Selections in last year's RC were a bit random. Probably because they lack confidence in their own judgement. Expected to continue this year!

I think it’s safe to say that Henry didn’t know what his top lineup was in 2005 either. Certainly there were some positions set in stone (McCaw, Collins, Jack, Ali, Hayman, Carter, Umaga, Mils), but there was plenty of chopping and changing of lineups and not just for ‘lesser’ tests.

Even though Rodders was preferred (I’m a massive fan), I think there was case of ‘if Lauaki is fit, we want him there’. Who were the top two wingers? We were playing 4 of them and from my perspective it wasn’t a horses for courses.

I’d say they took a gamble on Woodcock in 2005 after only a handful of games in 04. It certainly paid off in the end, but there certainly was an unknown element to it, plus a bit of Blues bias 😉

The number of different midfield, loose forward and back 3 combos tried was not insignificant.

Selections in 2005 particularly the early part of the year did not reflect what Henry and co started out with in 2004.

My point is that Fozzie does need time and I’m more in the camp of let’s see how it goes because it’s not unusual to see a bit of selection variation and some uneasiness from fans along the way when a coach is starting out.

I guess the big difference is that by that time the general public was behind the coaches because we could see where they were going - they had already drawn a line of what the game plan would look like with the French game in 2004 and the players had also bought into it (I'm sure I heard Mils speak about this):

We're yet to see anything like that from this coaching team.
