on a related but completely opposite note, the same dreamers who are always pushing this stuff are trying to leverage our possibility of hosting Olympic football in 2032 to once again try for a 20,000 seat stadium
In a city of 150,000
without a major sports team to play in it
I am sure the 800 strong crowd at a Northern Pride game will loooove all the additional space
I am becoming more and more convinced that the people who work in public infrastructure are mentally deficient
It's interesting the stadium capacities for NZ towns and cities compared to size of town. They are ridiculous.
(I've used the new proposed one for Chch)
OK, some of them are just a grandstand plus banks and terraces. But still.
Invercargill is probably not much different to current Cairns. But I assume the new Cairns proposal is more bells and whistles than Rugby Park, and whatever Cairns have. They used an athletics stadium in the RLWC? That was a bit shit, I admit.

@dogmeat how many other stadiums over 20k does london have though, id say more than 10
the rational of % of population does have an upper limit as we're just never going to get +200k full seated stadiums
edit: looked it up, exactly 10

Just here to support your argument, there is definitely more than 10.

@gt12 just checked and the google result just said london stadiums but the actual list says "football", other than twickers i thin the rugby ones are a bit smaller...checking is a step too far

For god's sake don't do that, completely against the fern ethos.
Had me worried for a minute there.

Lords and The Oval.
However ... Watford and Reading aren't London.

@kiwiwomble Yeah I wasn't really trying to show the total capacity of London's stadia - after all you can only go to one at a time.
I wasn't even that interested in Wembley's the /shrug was supposed to indicate that I think the whole idea of looking at a stadiums capacity as a % of the local population is meh - so what. Sall population centres will always have a higher % and big ones lower but I don't think it signifies 5/8 Fuck All.
However as you went to all that effort. Craven Cottage is currently being redeveloped to make it even more awesome and will have a capacity of 30K when it re-opens

@shark you're probably the best person to ask, are the surrounding regional councils chipping in now? i know a couple of years back they generally said no but maybe thats changed?

The information for Spurs is a touch out of date too.

There are extremely strict policing laws too around what stadiums can have events on the same day too. Only so many police / stewards to go around.
Reading is a bit of a stretch too as a London stadium.

@kiwiwomble What has happened to The Den as I thought it had the ability to hold slightly over 20,000? Maybe the visitors end has been closed to prevent the inevitable trouble it's occupation will bring.

@higgins haven’t compiled the list myself, just cut and paste it from a very quick google

I remember 1993 Bledisloe in Dunedin. They added extra capacity. 39,000 in a city of about 105,000 at the time.
Let alone seeing 1970s Okara Park full with 30k etc, or say 1983 Rotorua for the Lions match with 30k - each in a town of about 40k at the time.
It was very cheap to maintain a ground that is 85% grass banks. Just a bit of gas money for the tractor mower.

That was the first ever million dollar gate in NZ. The ORFU set up the tent village at Bathgate Park for pre and post match festivities for profit and also to take pressure off Dunedin's bars. Massive attendance from visiting fans domestically and internationally.
