@nta Surely it's next up. I know they are doing some more Troy and Three Kingdoms related stuff. A 40K game will do mental numbers, and I'll be one of them!

Is there still a market for games like those and StarCraft ?

I’m more of an “observational” gamer nowadays. One son is obsessed with Far Cry, the other Zelda and I have a bit of a go here and there and in both cases the amazing immersion in those games is just mind blowing. I love sitting watching them play, explore, do shit, get frustrated solving puzzles…..the whole shebang.

Genuine question @Paekakboyz cos there’s just so many games of that ilk ( solo player running round in a sandbox ) that I wonder if the strategy games of the early 90s are still popular ?

@mn5 those games are still going but pretty niche compared to the biggest games. Nothing like SC2 in terms of pro games (broodwar aside) and I hope rts hang around.

Companies are making bank with remastered classics from the late 90s and 2000s. Nostalgia in spades!

@nzzp what kind of games do you usually like?

Tend to prefer thinking games over FPS type. Really enjoyed Portal 2, for instance, and played through SubNautica just now. Horizon Zero Dawn is probably my top game - just so well put together.

Unpopular opinion here, but got bored by Witcher 3. Had such high hopes, but couldn't get excited by teh shitty combat and inventory management. May have another crack sometime though, I hear a second attempt can pay off.

I found the learning curve tough the first time out.

Combat against humans was ridiculously hard and monsters ridiculously easy by comparison. That was probably my main complaint.

@nzzp I just saw that Witcher 4 is in the works BUT release won't be prior to 2025...

I went back and played the second one and it was a bit crap by comparison. But I'm really there for the pictures aka ploughing of sorceresses 😉

going to jump on the Witcher 3 = ones of the best games ever bandwagon, we'll worth the $70 bucks i paid for it and even more so considering that included the two DLC's, the second of which is a pretty epic game in its own right, who new map etc

some of the storys are pretty awesome and complex, having something as complicated as the bloody baron as the first real chapter is pretty cool

If you prefer puzzle type games, there's games such as these:

D&D type games I'm not interested in. Rather do proper FPS and put up with the reaction times of ADHD kids.

I bought one of these a couple of years back for the basement

Pretty fun, man the graphics are funny on some of the old games. Twin Cobra and Double Dragon still hold up pretty well though!

    Screenshot_20210330-195751_Chrome.jpg

These are the sort of games youse guys are talking about right?

I decide to put retropie onto one of my raspberry pi's but in the long run I want to make a fullsize arcade machine. I'm hoarding a couple of good CRTs for that.

It funny to open the thing up and see how little computer-stuff is in there - it is literally a black box the size of a laptop.

Bloody kids have no idea how lucky they are to get free credits, or how hard we had to work to make 20c last back in the days!

    Or not work.

Back in my 'just quit Uni' days with something like $50 a week less rent and food on the dole hours could be wasted at the spacies parlour as long as you had a few 20c pieces and a mate with a weed supply. you could lock in to Defender for a long time.

Righto nerds, I just grabbed an HP Omen on discount ($600 markdown) and once I finish setting it up I'm keen.

Last game I really snagged was Witcher III and a bit of COD. My previous laptop was 6 years old so it was doing ok.

    What's good?

Where was the deal? That is a seriously good one.

@nostrildamus HP were running discounts on that model according to the shop nerd. Across their site and retailers.

This was $2900 down to $2300 for the 1P6U9PA model. I saw it elsewhere for less but not sure if it is still running.

One of my projects is a arcade machine running RetroPie so I can waste an inordinate amount of time playing Galaga and Mortal Kombat

Galaga and Defender were awesome. Gameplay is the most important thing not graphics.
