Imho the Balvenie 12 double wood is a fantastic standard level whisky.

For whisky with an e, Teeling has some good stuff.

I concur on the Balvenie. Classic drop.
I had a bottle of Teeling once and even though I am partial to the Irish stuff didn’t really enjoy it. Just on personal preference probably

I’m browsing the fern while sipping the bowmore 15. My memory of the standard bowmore is pure burn but the 15 is pretty decent.

A fairly empty bottle of the 12 given to me only 2 weeks ago lays the foundation to that statement. 😉

@dogmeat I think a few learned form last time and have been able to get thier contactless services up and running quicker than last time (we had a delivery form our butcher today)

If our lockdown is extended beyond Friday I will be looking at getting more Bourbon!

I see one of the new cases is a baby (<12 months old)

Is drinking bourbon not an instant forum ban? Very poor mans whisky.

No, but holding this opinion should be.

Drink away with your Jim beam and Jack Daniels. Hate the stuff.

Thinking Jim Beam & Jack Daniels are bourbon is the same as thinking Johnny Walker red label is scotch.

Honestly, pretty much so everything but those two.

A woodford or a makers drunk neat over ice a huge step up in flavour profiling & smoothness. Both would be considered run of the mill bourbons, but they certainly aren't competitors to Jack / Jim.

I regularly drink Woodford Reserve, and not even the double oaked. Smooth, with nice full flavours. At the price it's a steal.

    Makers Mark?

Wild Turkey Longbranch is a nice drop.

Might look at Woodford Reserve next up

Jack and Jim have their place, usually with a mixer.

Maker's Mark is the bourbon I usually drink. It really depends on what you like in a bourbon and how much you are willing to spend.

Bulleit is another worth a go.

Makers cask strength is still the best drink I’ve had.

@billy-tell everyone hates Jim Beam and Jack Daniels. It’s the bottom of the barrel stuff.

@taniwharugby Had the wild turkey longbranch in Aruba and wasn’t that good. Again preferences.

@bovidae try Makers 46. I think a step up from Makers Mark.

If I am making a classic old fashioned, I often blend a bit of makers mark with a Basil Haydens.

Basil Haydens very smooth and nice on its own

@broughie had the Wild Turkey Rare Breed also, which is cask strength I think, was ok, but I'd take the Longbranch one over it, although I think might be the only WT one I like (neat or with ice/water)

I've tried that before, and the Private Selection. When I lived in the US the local supermarket had a huge selection of bourbon so you were spoilt for choice. I'd hate to know what these higher quality bourbons cost to buy in NZ. Duty free had its advantages.
