Most people I know with lane correction in their vehicles turns it off. It may work fine on the M4 or Autobahn but on NZ roads it is plain scary. A bit like Cruise Control it only really works well in ideal conditions.

Depends what you are in and the technology. The company car for my shop is a Subaru that has lane departure and it is terrible because most of our roads around here are shit and most don't even have road markings.

My father's E-tron Audi on the other hand is really bloody good. Completely different tech involved, not to mention $150K in price as well as the cars age.

@snowy And we've done the full circle. This conversation started on my pointing out how much I didn't like the driverless car tech on the Audi E-Tron I test drove!

Haha. Yeah I know, but some of it is better than others. I don't usually use any of it.

So managed a drive of the Audi Etron GT-RS yesterday.

Proper proper quick. Neck snapping off the line and the 70-90mph as fast as I've felt in anything..

But it's just completely devoid of any drama / emotion / excitement. And it comes in at a lazy 120k GBP! I just can't see how that work. I know I'm a bit of a dinosaur with my approach to cars, but surely if you are going to spend silly money on a wagon, then you want it to make you feel like you are in something special, you look something special, you are something special. This car just doesn't have it. As it stands right now, for your toy car, you simply need something that burns hydrocarbons.

Hopefully next week, we'll be getting behind an E-tron Quattro 55. This is looking the winner for me as it means we can ditch our X5 and move to something more planet friendly. I absolutely love our X5 though, so it'll be an emotional day. But the tax breaks on electric cars are just too tempting to avoid.

    Drove the Taycan.

It’s unbelievably good. Porsche handling, beautiful to ride in, fast as all hell & is the first electric car I’ve driven since the original Tesla roadster which delivers performance with some drama (still less than petrol drama, but has some).

It’s a real deal game changer for petrol heads like me.

And drove the iX3. Summary is that it's a cracking wagon, but comes with the same problem as a lot of electric cars. Its over priced. It's not a 60k GBP car, not even close.

Still, if we can lock in a tax efficient leasing deal it's a bit of a no brainer. So far ahead of the Q4 and XC40 on driving dynamics. Would like to see an iX first though, but that's not likely til 2022.

Low bars help short people get drunk.

@mariner4life I think you've confused TSF with your Tinder profile.

So you've driven a few of these now, what's the right car? Don't quibble about 30kms of range or $10k, what would you get from cars available today?

It really depends on what you want it for. I've driven and been in most, the only one I think I haven't is the original Audi E-Tron, which are basically impossible to get hold of around here. But here's my summary

If your a driver - Porsche Taycan. By a freaking mile. Best driving experience, best handling, best car. Pricey, but it is a Porsche.
If you want an SUV - BMW iX3. Drives like a car, good space, good practicality. Bit pricey for what it is tho.
IF you want a car - Tesla Model 3. Tech in it is awesome, class leading. Not the quality of BMW / Audi and not cheaper tho. BMW i4 really close here.
If you want a runner- Mini. Has mini handling, a bit of street cred. Range is not great tho.

    Others I've driven / Seen

Volvo XC40. Looks great I reckon and has good practicality.
Mercedes EQC - absolutely stunning inside, and drives well. But looks very American / Cheap and there is better value to be add. Mercedes pricing doesn't make any sense to me.
Mercedes EQA is a better proposition, but simplyisnt' very big inside.
BMW i4. Basically an electric 3-series. In Gran coupe mode, I think it's a great proposition. Not driven though, but it's a BMW so it will drive well. It's probably what I would buy if could only have one car.
Jaguar I-Pace also goes really well and looks great. But the support infrastructure in the UK is really weak (and it's JLR so it won't be reliable),
Audi E-Tron GT. Cannot see why you'd buy one over a Taycan.
Audi Q4. Not fast, not premium feel, not large range, not worth it.

    Other Comments

If you want an SUV, the BMW iX could be well worth waiting for
I really like the Hyundai Ioniq, but my wife is a car snob, so there is zero point me looking at it
Same goes for Volkswagen ID-4. Q4 platform, but much cheaper.
Mustang E-Mach, I have the wife car snob issue again so not seen. But I think it could be brilliant. Looks great, but has the wrong name. It's not a fucking mustang.

    Avoid at All Costs

Tesla Model X. Extremely ugly and far far too expensive.
BMW i3. It's a statement car, not a real proposition
Anything Chinese - DS / Great Wall / MG. Poor quality and bullshit range.

There's a few others floating around, but thats the extent of my research.

You haven't looked at the iX3 yet?

I think it looks great, but no AWD option seems a real shame.

@gt12 yeah see the second line!

    It’s great. But it’s 60k for an x3.
