Captain America: Civil War

Kind of hard to remember, in the middle of all the explosions, punching, and awesome, that this was actually about Captain America and Bucky, and one fucked up unit played by the German sniper kid from Basterds.

The bringing together of the characters - I haven't seen Ant Man at this point - was great, and all the nerds cheered around their gluttonous mouthfuls of popcorn and halitosis when Spider Man showed up.

It was a lot of fun, and a lot of movie at around 2 hours. A good addition to the Marvel Universe and the CA storyline. Probably puts the Captain America films on an upward trajectory i.e. original was OK, Winter Soldier I thought was pretty good, and this one was slightly better.

There are two end scenes BTW - one mid-credits and one end credits. I was busy trying to herd the boy's friends out the door to their parents who had already been waiting 20 minutes to pick them up. Fuck you, cinema previews!

I give it 4.5 Ridiculous Scarlett Johansson poses out of 5.
-

Agreed.

Also, best Spiderman on film (yep, better than any Spiderman movie). Black Panther is a good addition also.

And yep, it's a lot of fun (take note Mr Z Snyder).

Best superhero film since, um, Deadpool. ;)
-

From the trailers I've seen, I'd say yes.
-

Watchmen

I had only seen part of this before, so lined it up on Netflix while the wife was in hospital the last couple of days.

I never read the graphic novel, so don't have that perspective. Can only assume the fanbois hated the movie for some reason.

Anyway, I quite like this movie - it ends in a way that is perhaps weak to some, because it reflects the ambiguity of life in a lot of ways. Its no flag-waving hoorah movie that an audience can easily consume. In that way it was probably a bit early for its time - we see the latest round of superhero movies with less and less clear-cut good and bad.

The world is suitably gritty, and Malin Akermann gets the girls out. What's not to like?

3.5 glowing blue penises out of 5.
-

Malin Akermann is hot, and quite often gets the girls out. Bless her.

The fanbois loved it, well at least the Fern one's did. I'm in the definitely don't love it camp (it is a Zack Snyder film) and the fanbois took me to task for it IIRC.
-

Weird shitometer movie of the week: Stoker.

Very creepy and dark, a sprinkling of incest, with a couple of psychotic sociopaths running around and strangling people with belts. Which they REALLY enjoy.

I'm basically a child in an adults body but yeah I really enjoyed it and my wife absolutely loved it. It's very well done overall.
-

Watched "The Martian" on the plane. Really fucking good movie.

Does anyone else find "Mr & Mrs Smith" wildly entertaining?
-

Love that movie. Especially when they both figure out the truth and start trying to kill each other. So much chemistry in that movie, poor Jen never stood a chance.
-

She's fucking hot in that movie too.

-

Been home most of the week as Mrs TA recovers from a hospital visit - no kids around and no chance of action = movie time. And I'm not just talking redtube

The Martian

Bloody good movie. I'm sure its all been said but Damon was excellent in this. Much better than LdC in The Fucking Revetard.

This was a space movie, psychological analysis, and comedy all wrapped up into one. Really good performances throughout and only a couple of questions I had over the sciencey side of things, like why the fuck the ship they landed couldn't withstand any storm possible, and non-sciencey things like why the fuck the Media chick (Wiig) was in making scientific of psychological decisions in everything.

I noted they didn't ever reference a year, or even a month, which was reasonably smart. It was clearly one of those "near future" things, yet they weren't using holograms or any of that shit. But the Mars program was well advanced and into its fourth mission, with five planned.

Just imagine what we'll be able to do as SpaceX continues to reach out...

4.5 shit-grown potatoes out of 5.

================================

Ant-Man

Fuck I enjoyed this. Paul Rudd is the fucking man. The action and insect-related stuff I was a bit tentative about but they did it with style, even if it did feel a bit Avengers-lite at points.

The comedy element was great, led by Rudd, and with Michael Pena doing a fucking great job as the Hispanic sidekick, supported by the other two idiots.

Great addition to the Marvel universe, even if there were some tweaks to get it to fit into a standalone movie.

And it had Evangeline Lily in it. Can't wait to see here in the outfit for The Wasp.

4 giant Thomas the Tank Engines out of 5.
-

Did some flying so finally caught up on some flicks.

The Big Short - I thought this was awesome, but that because it's heavily linked to the field I work in. Steve Carrell was brilliant, Brad Pitt was unrecognisable, and the whole movie was a bit depressing in the reality it was portraying. But overall I thought it was fantastic. 8.5/10

Straight Outta Compton - great movie, especially for those who are were fans of NWA. As much a race-driven movie as a musical documentary. Suge Knight and and to a lesser extent Jerry Heller don't come out of it smelling like roses. 8/10

Ant-Man - I was mixed on this. I'm a massive Paul Rudd fan, but I'm not convinced he was the right fit for this. Typical Marvel sort of movie really, goody vs baddy. 6/10

The Revenant - Yawn. Overly long, little dialogue to expand on what was a plot with many dimensions. Can see why LDC got his oscar, but I thought Hardy could have been equally as deserving. LDC's make up artist probably as deserving as him. 3/10.
-

Out of interest how come ? he's always come across as a nothing sort to me, not funny or charismatic and with an oversize head of Zinzan Brooke proportions.
