Did some flying so finally caught up on some flicks.

The Big Short - I thought this was awesome, but that because it's heavily linked to the field I work in. Steve Carrell was brilliant, Brad Pitt was unrecognisable, and the whole movie was a bit depressing in the reality it was portraying. But overall I thought it was fantastic. 8.5/10

Straight Outta Compton - great movie, especially for those who are were fans of NWA. As much a race-driven movie as a musical documentary. Suge Knight and and to a lesser extent Jerry Heller don't come out of it smelling like roses. 8/10

Ant-Man - I was mixed on this. I'm a massive Paul Rudd fan, but I'm not convinced he was the right fit for this. Typical Marvel sort of movie really, goody vs baddy. 6/10

The Revenant - Yawn. Overly long, little dialogue to expand on what was a plot with many dimensions. Can see why LDC got his oscar, but I thought Hardy could have been equally as deserving. LDC's make up artist probably as deserving as him. 3/10.

Out of interest how come ? he's always come across as a nothing sort to me, not funny or charismatic and with an oversize head of Zinzan Brooke proportions.
-

You don't find Will Ferrell funny either, right?
-

He's hit or miss, some of his stuff is great, some isn't. Paul Rudd misses permanently in my opinion.
-

Rudd's portrayals of the dejected mid-life husband in Knocked Up and This Is 40 are great. I thought his Ant-Man was pretty good too.

Has the sense of dry humour and timing I enjoy.

People at work laughed their arses off at Arrested Development and I didn't even find it mildly amusing. Diff'rent Strokes...
-

Always found him funny - even back when he was starting as Mike on Friends.

He stole the movie for me in Forgetting Sarah Marshall (who as luck would have it, was quite forgettable) and then his roles in knocked up and i love you man.

Each to their own, I suppose.
-

Role Models was indeed good. The best actor in these movies is John C. Reilly.

Yeah there's a bit of a group of them who always pop up with gratuitous cameos. Step Brothers is fucken outstanding humour and John C bouncing off Will Ferrell is the main reason for that. Definitely far more worthy of a sequel than most "comedies"

Rudd was the co-lead of Role Models but it was Stifler ( whatever his real name is ) that stole the show there as he always does ( the American Pie movies were shit in basically any scene that he wasn't in )
-
Watched Ant Man last night and really enjoyed it. Well scripted and acted. Good timing from the director and editing team. A fun story from something I was sure would be on the bottom of the comic strip action comedy movie genre. Happy to say I was very wrong.

Agree, Reilly is awesome in both Step Brothers & Talladega Nights. Perfect accomplice to Ferrell's on-off ability to hit genuine comedy.

Not seen Role Models, will have to check it out.

Saw Sean William Scott on an interview a few years ago, he wasn't even close in real life to the antaganostic arseholes which he plays - quite down to earth and humble. Was very surprising.
-

I love the way Reilly uses small, goofy variations on words, like using "raper" instead of "rapist". Loved him in Step Brothers. Loved him as Dr. Steve Brule.

He actually did a movie with Sean William Scott that was quite good - The Promotion.

The mockumentary, FUBAR, is a good laugh. Which reminds me, I need to watch Goon.
-

FINALLY they've released Deadpool on Google Play in Australia. Own it, now get to watch it and get all the bits I missed due to laughing up my colon at the cinema.

Also noted the Apple TV menu that Deadpool keeps popping up in various movie headers e.g.

The best thing about Reilly in step brothers was his ability to really look completely, utterly dumb and clueless. His facial expressions and demeanour through the whole thing are just spot on funny.
-
