I always thought “chippies” was to differentiate from “chips”.

Even my English wife knows the right context for them now when I talk about them, although still calls chips crisps.

Nope, if I’m going to a mates place and ask what to bring the reply will be “beer and chippies” every time.
Loads of people I know say chippies.
