<p>This is an odd point. Why didn't the cop intervene? If he was on duty surely he would have and even off duty - well, aren't police never really off duty? I'd imagine he will have some questions to answer.</p> -

<p>I'm hearing talks on the Radio about some sort of "self defence" argument for people in abusive relationships. Only caught the tail end of one snippit but the gist of what I got sounded almost like "retaliation first" ie battered wife kills abusive hubby in his sleep because she wanted to get in first before he killed her ? Interested in aucklandwarlord and Godders take on this.....I'm sure I got that particular bit wrong but sounds to me like some seriously murky waters.</p>

Easy for bogans in OZ to get all high and mighty and go on about how he's a he hero and they'd all smash any fluffybunny who dared enter their house ( complete with ubiquitous use of the word "mate" to emphasize their point ) but guess I'm just interested to see if any have backtracked on their view or they reckon "the fluffybunny got what he deserved...(mate )"</p> -

<p>Not entirely sure how it works in Aussie, but in NZ there were a heap of rules around what you should and shouldn't do when intervening off duty. If you had been drinking, the best rule of thumb was not to get involved hands on (headline reads "Drunk off duty cop bashes good samaritan"). Or if you didn't think you could safely handle it, you weren't supposed to intervene either - for example and off duty cop shouldn't get involved in a brawl where they're gonna end up getting their own head punched in as well. </p>

<p>I would imagine that provide that off-duty cop called the police immediately, they should have their arses covered. </p> -

Don't know the full details as we're not in Souff Straya and am only geting it third hand through Mrs Boo but he copped one and may well be forced off active duty. Think something to do with his ear and his balance. Not good. -

<p>Yeah it's a different kettle of fish intervening in those sorts of things without tactical options and without back up. There was a guy out south a few years back who got a really serious head injury at the hands of some teens when he stopped some kid getting a stomping. I have intervened in things off duty, and would do so again in a heartbeat but that's a personal choice. I'm a big guy so I'm never too worried, but I can absolutely understand why some people tend not to. You open yourself up to all sorts of allegations and potential injury. My rule of thumb always was to do something only if someone is likely to get seriously hurt if I don't. I wouldn't intervene in a simple fight, but I'd intervene in a grievous assault if I was able to. </p>

<p>A few years ago we were out on a work-do with my section. Bowled out of a bar on Queen Street and saw words being exchanged between a big white guy and a little Indian guy, who appeared to be the aggressor. Things escalated real quickly and the big guy got jumped by about 8 of the other guy's mates and was getting his head stomped on the ground by most of them.</p>

<p>5 of us got involved (while our girlfriends all stood there wondering what the hell was happening) and the guys fair shat themselves when they realised the numbers were now almost balanced up and that we were way bigger than them. We were more just pulling guys off the fella on the ground and throwing them out of the way but they kept running back to put the boot in. One of my female co-workers got punched in the face which ramped things up quite significantly. I've never seen some guys run so fast when they realised that a world of shit was about to rain down on them if they stuck around. </p>

<p>Even though we'd been drinking, the option of doing nothing wasn't really an option at all. They probably would have done the guy a serious head injury or worse the way they were going. The funniest thing was, when one of the boys had the main aggressor up against the wall by the scruff of his neck, the aggressor yelling "Leave me alone, I'll call the cops". He had no idea that we were slightly more than just good samaritans. </p>

<p>Cue shitloads of paperwork the following day for getting involved, but well worth when I think about what we probably stopped from occurring. </p> -
