Funny you should say that. In the mid 90s there was a Led Zep tribute album called "Encomium" that included a version of "hey, hey what can I do" by, yes, Hootie and the Blowfish. Dross.

Dread Zeppelin's first album had some interesting versions of Led Zep songs, done in reggae style. Their later albums took the joke too far though, don't bother with them. -

That Mr Jones was a catchy radio tune. Did they ever make another song?

Appetite for Destruction? Or are you referring to that Use your Illusion self indulgent crap?
-

It'll probably come as no surprised to anybody that I regularly listen to the entire GnR original back catalogue and think with probably the exception of My World, all of it is completely fucking awesome.

Lies is split between old-school rock with Axl's voice probably at it's peak, and some acoustic brilliance. Appetite is THE definitive rock album of it's era, and the UYI double album is purely about Slash for me.

Some of it is 30 years old, but it sitll sounds fresh as a daisy to me.
-

I didn't listen to much Dread Zeppelin but I can't see a joke band being able to carry the joke for more than one or two albums . Have you ever heard of Hayseed Dixie? -

Chillis were the the ultimate "I have just got to Uni & want people to think I'm a bit out there and I brought my surfboard with me even tho' I can't surf!" fucking dross. God how many tools sat there in their dorm rooms listening to Under The Bridge with their door open, shirt off, moodily nursing a beer in the hope that hot chick would walk by & they could explain the art of the bass to her or the deep lyrics...

Pretty sure every generation has "that" band, it just goes in rolling 3 or 4 year bursts as new douche bags get to University & do their BSoc/Sci, - Chillis, then Rage, then Offspring etc.... through to Evanescence.

August & Everything After by Counting Crows is literally the ideal album to listen to right through if you have run the bath & got the razor blade but can't quite get in the mood to end it. Its a great album, but if you are in anything other a very upbeat mood it makes falling under the central line look a quick & relatively painless option.

Splendid rant there. I'm not going to disagree with you about the chillis but I never saw that part of their fan base first hand. I saw the younger ones with long shorts and mothers milk t shirts which I'm guessing grew up to be the twats you described . Rage were the same and I've never understood how smashing pumpkins became so big , Billy Corgans voice is awful and if I ever want to hear a whining , nasal stream of consciousness rant I simply pick up the phone and dial my ex wife .

The singer from Counting Crows suffers from sort of crippling mental illness which stopped them from really making the most of the success of August and everything after. The way you described the album is bang on, if you were ever standing on the edge of a bridge and couldn't decide whether or not to step off a couple of minutes of round here would send you hurtling into space. -

I appreciate a good rant even if I disagree with much of it. In my opinion they did three sensational albums in "Mothers Milk" Blood Sugar" ( I do despise Under the Bridge though ) and "One Hot Minute".......the naked jumping around shit got pretty tired early on but the funk/rock combo worked awesomely I thought. It was around 99 when they lost their way and released some absolute crap....that new single has promise though. Always thought if you combined Faith No Mores Mike Patton and the keyboardist with the Chillis sans Keidis you'd Frankenstein the PERFECT band of that era. John F is one hell of a guitarist.

Agree with Mothers Milk and BSSM. One hot minute was the only album I truly disliked.

Loved uplift mofo party plan too. But only got into that after Mothers Milk

Mothers Milk and Janes Addiction - Janes Addiction would be in my top 5 albums. For years Mothers Milk was top now I think it would be Saimese Dream
-

Uplift Mofo party plan was a goody as were the previous two ( like you I discovered these after their current albums at that point in time ), they were really "raw" and couldn't sound any more different to what they've done lately if they tried.....my favourite tracks off Mothers Milk would be "Taste the Pain" "Stone Cold Bush" ( playing that bassline note for note was a magical moment in a high school band I was in ) "Higher Ground" ( despite it being thrashed to death ) and "Knock me down".....

I agree with jegga and Gollum that Chillis fans could be an obnoxious type of dickhead but substitute Mothers Milk t shirts for Nirvana/Smashing Pumpkins/Pearl Jam or whatever and were those people any better ? not in my opinion, just more angst ridden and prone to suicide. Fuck I don't miss 90s fashion in the slightest....

Janes Addiction were pretty cool, I really like "Pets" by Porno for Pyros ( featuring whatshisface from JA ).
-

I was one of those guys at Uni. I started just when One Hot Minute had come out though, which I liked for a bit, but then it fell off the radar, whilst BSSM never has. RHCP was often on play, as was Offspring & Rage. Others would listen to counting crows, but they were never my cup of tea.

I don't really give a shit about other peoples opinions when it comes to what music I enjoy. If you are going to stereotype and pigeon hole somebody because they listen to the Chili's, so be it. But it's a rather moronic thing to do.
-

That whole album is amaziing. Packin 25 and Black girlfreind the two best songs off it IMO.
-

Coincidentally i have just started listening to Mothers Milk again recently. My boys love Magic Johnson, and Subway to Venus is fucking awesome funk. Great album. BSSM is excellent, but i haven't like anything since. They should have stayed on the drugs.

I actually like Counting Crows. August & Everythin After is a pretty good album, and Recovering the Satellites has some good songs on it. It's not on a regular rotation, but i break it out every so often. You're right though, not the most uplifting stuff.
-

The horn section help make that what it is, OUTSTANDING track. Can't believe I forgot to mention it. Magic Johnsons good to attempt to rap to in the car and embarrass the shit out of the boys every now and again.....
-

I saw their singer in a college bar once. He looked very un rock n roll. Did try to chat up some freshman girls though.

I've given the Chili Peppers a lot of shit over the years, but the leaked demo from them was pretty good.

Not most peoples cup of tea, but my favorite song from this years Eurovision was Italy's song

Every once in a while I chop my usual playlist at the gym (consists of my 100 or so songs of the moment) and just do random through the 30gb or so stuff I have on there. A lot of it is grunge, heavy metal etc but today I got stuck in to a bit of tool which I hadnt heard for a while. Still so dam good.
