Sure but we have the choice of 3 average spinners and our batting isn't great. Aussie had the choice of some very talented bowlers and good batsmen.
Somerville is probably ranked 2 out of 3 in terms of bowling, and he has shown in two innings he can hang around for 50+ balls. He'd be my guy for the second test.

I’ve always found the idea of a night watchman pretty ridiculous to be honest. You’re a batsman who’s been sitting on your arse for however long, go and bat for a couple of overs for fucks sake. It’s your job.

Agree to disagree to some extent. Cricket is catered for batsmen overall, if you’re a shit bowler you never have to bowl…..( have a quick google of Stephen Flemings test bowling stats ) but if you’re a shit batsman you sometimes have to bat.
Somerville slogged his guts out for quite awhile and then has to pad up and go out there and face a bit of pressure ( which he’s handled very well to be fair )
Strategies don’t always work out perfectly.
Then again KW is God so whatever he wants, he gets.

Well no, from a NZ perspective Paddles, Bracewell, L Cairns, Collingwood etc we’re all pretty handy batsmen.
Boult is probably our best regular 11 in my lifetime. Possibly not a lot competition given luminaries such as Martin, Chatfield, Morrison... That said, we've always batted deep, usually to at least 9, and Smith mentioned in his autobiography that in at least one of his tests, everyone except Chatfield had a test 100. Often not a lot of choice, our top orders tended to have at least one passenger somewhere.

Yeah him, Paddles, Bracewell woulda helped that stat. Boult is a very capable batsman.
I remember 10-15 years ago Vettori and McCullum at 7 and 8 had a few tons and the whole top order had none ? ( I might be wrong, just after Fleming retired and as Ross Taylor was debuting )
How good are these two batting ? Keep fighting boys !!!!!!

Yeah - we're totally fucked.
There's no way our strategy of nudging it around for the next 25 overs to set a friendly T20 target can possibly work.
Only a fucking idiot would say it is ours to lose - and no-one has.
Give the trophy to the Indians now.
