Anyway. I've been really impressed with Mitchell and think he could be a good test batsman for next 3 to 4 years. Not at 3, I don't know what that is about. a 5 or 6, or even 4.

Yep, when the side was first listed on Day One I assumed the various TV and Cricinfo editors had made a lazy straight swap of Williamson and Mitchell in the list. I didn't genuinely expect Mitchell to walk out at 3.

Having a 5, 6, 7 of Mitchell, Ravindra, and Blundell (in that order?) could make for a balanced middle order and fifth/sixth bowling options. Assuming Nicholls shifts up one if no Taylor - among other possibilities.

@rapido said in NZ tour of India:

With Neesham and Anderson already in his position, and with that weakness, I pretty much dismissed him, Then CdG got promoted from nowhere about 2 or 3 years later to usurp Neesham and Anderson ... no chance.

An interesting set of names.... Neesham has gone from a player that we used to worry about being injured ahead of Test series in the mid-2010's, to not even in the conversation for the red ball game. Though I see his first class batting average remains at 32, so maybe that's why his Twitter bio seems to have been updated to hitting "a white ball" with a stick. I wonder if he still has a role to play yet, but maybe he's in the same bracket as Ish.

I was wondering 'what happened to Corey Anderson?' just the other day, I see from last year he may switch allegiances to the US: Former Black Caps star Corey Anderson signs three-year contract with USA Cricket

I do wonder what happened to Neesh at test level, he had a bloody good start with two hundreds in close succession but faded after that.

Anderson looked a long term superstar, shit anyone who can outscore Jesse Ryder in a partnership must be good, but again, what the fuck happened there New Zealand Cricket ?

I thought they’d be duking it out for the all rounder spot in the BCs for years.

I think Anderson had a crisis of confidence. I think he described it himself as imposter syndrome. He'd always felt he'd been elevated above his true abilities. Right from when he debuted for Canterbury as a 16 year old. I think it truely un-ravelled for him at Mumbai Indians rather than with NZC.

Neesham lost his test spot on the Australian tour of 2015/16. Was replaced by Santner to re-juggle bowling options for a the unknowns of the first pink ball test; Adelaide - usually 2 spinners, but swing under lights, pink ball, more grass to protect the ball. Then CdG got the spot in the home summer and owned it for 5 years.

I think it was a quite sensible allocation of resources for both Neesham himself and by 'NZC' for him to then focus on white ball.

I thought he went home injured from that tour? (Just checked - yep). CdG certainly then made the spot his own for a while though.

Sorry guys late into the conversation but I really think they’ve missed a trick not picking Wagner yes its spinning but Somerville didn’t show much apart from some batting. But that’s not what he’s in the team to do it’s to take wickets.

Ravindra does a version of Mitchell; two consecutive boundaries and then caught at slip...

If he’s in there for his batting he’s leaving it late to make an impact

If Somerville can somehow bat for another full session today, I suppose it'll at least reduce the margin of defeat further down that record list...

Great ammo for the “Timmy never bats responsibly” fern bandwagon.

You seem to mention it more often than the bandwagoners 🙂

Timmy can bat however he likes. In turn I'd never bat him higher than nine (if they're ever mad enough to put me in charge...)

    A Cricinfo comment just for @MN5 🙂

Jigar Shah: "Two senior pros of NZ in absence of KW, played like a slogger. Disappointing to see such rash shots from Taylor as well as Southee."

Yeah maybe they’ve all given up ? I always stood up for him.

Fair to say Somerville hasn’t pressed his claims too much in this test match. Jeepers.

Jigar Shah has obviously never seen Southee bat before

The limping dog has been put out of it's misery...

Oh well, looking on the bright side, it will be early to bed tonight at least.

What an abject display of batting this morning. The middle and lower order gets the chance to try and bat for as long as they want, and they don't even last 45 minutes.
